why is getting your hair cut so expensive these days?

r/

i know inflation is a thing, and I know a lot of places charge for cost of labour and supplies, which is reasonable, but it gets to a point where it’s a bit ridiculous. my hair is quite damaged and I was looking for a place to do a proper trim. I wasn’t expecting the cheapest, especially because I want to retain some length and would need a good cut, but my friend suggested where she went, and I thought about it until I found out she had to pay £50 for just getting her ends trimmed. She wasn’t even in there for 10 minutes, and it cost her £50. Everywhere I look, just a cut is about this price or more. It’s crazy

What do you mean by “just a trim”? What does the service include? What is the difference in service and price between a “trim” and a full haircut?

Probably cus they can only do like 1 in an hour and they split it with the shop so they might make like 25-30 an hour which seems reasonable

it’s always been more expensive for women

a mens haircut is like 20 to 30$ at a nice place in the us
    a womens is like 100$

my perspective on this has always been that the well remunerated positions in society reflect what people care about. sports and entertainment is something we have feelings about. likewise people care about how they look, and society places more emphasis on that for women so prices reflect that.

I hate to tell you but that’s not a crazy price…you’re paying for the skill of the stylist. You can cut your hair at home (I did for years) for free. Now I pay $60 twice a year for the shampoo/condition, cut and conversation with a lovely woman. Go to a men’s barber if you want a cheaper trim, they tend to do a great job but it’s more bare bones.

One of the reasons why I cut my own hair now.

I’ve gotten my haircut in the same ladies basement since I was eight and it still costs $12 😂

Why would everything cost dramatically more but not that?

I’m in Australia and it’s so expensive here too. The worst part is, I want a very basic trim – I just want my hair trimmed a couple of centimetres perfectly straight across in a very blunt fashion just past my shoulders. I don’t have a fringe, I don’t want layers, I don’t get a wash or blowout and it still costs me $60. At my last trim in February I sat in the chair for 7 minutes and paid $65

Do you have a hair school near by? I get mine cut at the student salon and it’s $10 for a wash and cut. I leave a $10 tip. Once they get to the student salon they are close to graduating and I’ve never had a bad experience.

I used to have really short hair as a woman and had to argue to be charged for a men’s cut. WTF does gender have to do with it? Long, medium, short hair, bald…that’s it! Price accordingly and stop gouging women.

Last time I went to get a haircut was probably 3 years ago. I went for a trim and blow dry. It cost me 90$. I’ve been trimming and cutting my own hair ever since. People always think I went to get a haircut so I’m doing an okay job.

It’s less about how easy you think it is to cut your hair and more about the time slot you’re taking up from a stylist that needs to pay their booth rental.

You’re free to choose your budget and what you’re willing to pay, but a stylist also deserves to earn a living.

The beauty industry lacks the benefits a lot of white collar jobs will get, and tends to leave it’s professionals reliant on a partner.

It falls under “if it’s so easy, why doesn’t everyone do it?”

If you’re in the US there are cheaper options but your hair is also going to look like it. I don’t believe you quite understand the process involved in a trim.

If you literally just want only a half inch of your hair cut off across only the very bottom tips of your hair and only across one time – that’s not a thing that exists.

Feel free to do it yourself and prove us wrong though!

My husband has been cutting mine with his clippers since covid. No style really, just straight across my back. I don’t think I could afford a salon now.

Women’s haircuts at salons keep going up in prices but men’s haven’t. It’s always cost the same where I am for men’s but women’s have pretty much doubled everywhere in the last 10-15 years. Aside from I guess the chains like Supercuts and Walmart salon.

It takes about 45 minutes to cut my hair. I am paying a skilled person to do that work plus the cost of the facility they have to do it in, their healthcare, etc. I don’t expect that to cost $20.

Thats why i grew mine out. I can give myself a shaggy cut and trim at home for free

    Those are crazy prices.

That’s the min it cost me bur from a stylist here. (Talking about washing, cutting and drying)

A normal women’s haircut it’s still around 20€ where I live (around 10€ for men).

Some years ago I went to a hairstylist who did it dirty cheap for both genders (10€) but sadly don’t go there anymore.
