I know he supported the current president throughout the years, but so did a lot of people. I mean what did he do to be seen as qualified by people for this specific position, rather than a different one? Why the DOD, and not something like Communications Director?

I can’t possibly fully understand how the brain of a mad man works, but my guess is because Hegseth wants to do things like make the military manlier or something. I never watch fox, so I don’t know what his tv personality is like, from what I’ve read he’s into a more macho military, which trump is also into.
To be honest, the way this administration picks us cabinet feels a lot like a treehouse of 12 year olds picking their ranks and taking meeting minutes. They nominate celebrity guests like a TV network putting together a crossover episode with all their favorite characters for the most specialist tv event

Pete Hegseth was a Fox News host who was all about performative machismo and militarism.
I’m pretty much it went down something like this: Donald was watching Fox News, possibly nursing a Big Mac, when he watched Pete doing some of his “macho soldier” schtick. In his shriveled little raisin of a brain, Trump probably thought “this is the kind of real man who represents the military back when it was great, and not a bunch of woke DEI blah blah blah etc etc”.
Since the yes men in his orbit never tell him “no”, Trump likely remained unchallenged on the nomination and the rest was history
He and Hegseth both seem to see the military as some John Wayne movie about square-jawed white guys shooting things, so they’re pretty simpatico on their juvenile misunderstanding of what the armed forces actually do.

Because our president watches a lot of TV. A lot of fox news. We have a fox news president. Pete was on fox news. He’s a white American man with nationalist views, he flatters trump. He went to Princeton. So that right there is enough for Trump. As for his actual career and policy positions, he is probably the most inept and unqualified secdef in American history. But when your president makes his decisions based off of fox news, this is what we get.
