I have a lot less than a billion dollars and I donate to charities now. I would donate more if I had Musk’s money. Although I wouldn’t donate half because I wouldn’t have nearly that much liquid at any point.

  3. jaypl99 Avatar

Yes I would. That is an insane amount of money.

  4. kyahxr Avatar

1000%. There is literally reason for a person to need $1billion, it’s just pure greed. So I might as well give it away

  5. Farscape55 Avatar

Sure, why not, it wouldn’t affect my quality of life one bit and even if it didn’t 100% solve the issue it would at least help some people out

  6. ConsistentCoyote3786 Avatar

Of course. I’d donate so much that I’d no longer be a billionaire. Just like Dolly. What the hell could any one person need a billion dollars for?!?

  7. ShellBellKell Avatar

Absolutely. There are so many good causes out there. Start locally and expand. Set up scholarships. Help so many people. Buy buildings and charge ridiculously low rent. Food giveaways. The list goes on.

  8. bad_faif Avatar

No. I would not use my money for anything other than evil machinations like putting laser guns on sharks and building power generators that rely on volcanos but cause eruptions due to an unintentional design flaw that I hide from the public and refuse to acknowledge.

  9. Past-Outside8050 Avatar

I would keep 25 million for me and donate the rest

  10. mangyrat Avatar

absolutely not one dime to any organization that say they help.

Charities are garbage and a lot of the money goes to the people running it.

If i had that kind of money i would pick the people personally or hire a person i trust picking who to help not give most of it to admirative costs of a charity.

would i help people yes right after i helped family

  11. lostinhh Avatar

I already do but… a billion? I’d struggle to sleep at night without donating at least half of it. But I’d try to do most of it myself, like building a little city in the middle of nowhere to house 1000 homeless and teach them skills for a year or so and rotate them out.

  12. Raven_Crowking Avatar

Way more than half. My needs are not all that great.

  13. scarsandwillpower Avatar

No. I will use my vast wealth to improve the lives of others, but I will maintain control of how and when it is spent. The heads of charitable organizations often pull in 6-figure salaries. A “good” charity is one that puts more than 20% of its budget towards actual aid/assistance/programs. The rest is all grift.

  14. YujiroDemonBackHanma Avatar

Donate yes, but probably not to the homeless.
I would instead support schools, talented students, and entrepreneurs.

  15. perry147 Avatar

Yes I would but I would also want some controls in place to ensure the money gets to the needy.

  16. Embarrassed_Flan_869 Avatar

I would become very generous to charities, like stupid amounts.

I would become the first billionaire people actually liked.

  17. unclejoe1917 Avatar

You better believe I would. I’d probably only use twenty to fifty million for myself and the rest is going to help fix some shit.

  18. MattLikesBeer25 Avatar

Sure. Why not. Not half though. I’d rather use that money how I see fit as opposed to handing over to a “charity” that does what they want with the funds.

  19. Oriejin Avatar

I don’t really want anything so it’d be cool to invest in long standing projects that DO something for the world.

  20. SteelToeSnow Avatar

of course, that’s the only point of having that kind of wealth; to use it to help as many people as possible.

  21. _dirty_taco Avatar

No. Most homeless people are homeless by choice of not wanting to participate with society. There are homeless centers open across the country and a lot of them say the homeless don’t bother staying because of the rules. I would help people within my circle and connected to my circle though. Friends of friends etc. When you start to help people they become dependent and expect more from you. So id be careful of who I helped and how I helped.

  22. No_Lavishness_3206 Avatar

No. I would however spend a lot of my money making life better for people in my city, my province, and my country. After that I would look beyond our borders.

  23. Appropriate_Fall6376 Avatar

Tbh no. Like why are you putting the burden of taking care of country’s people on non government officials?

  24. THEdopealope Avatar

I’d like to think I’d continuously spend my money on stuff, including helping people, such that I stay a millionaire.

  25. we_gon_ride Avatar

I’m not a billionaire now and I donate so yes definitely but in a greater amount

  26. VoodooSweet Avatar

Honestly when I dream about winning the lottery or whatever, I’m usually not even thinking about what I’d buy for myself. I dream about all the people that I could and would help, ALL the lives that I could and would change for the better.

  27. captainmilkers Avatar

Eventually I would but not half, homeless programs in America are so corrupt that I doubt my money would even make it down to their level.

I would instead do drive by money tosses. I’d frisbee stacks of 1000 bucks at random homeless people on the streets.

  28. ZestycloseAlfalfa736 Avatar

Yes, but proably food insecure people in 3rd world countries.

  29. Mioraecian Avatar

Donate no. I’d open and over see institutions to provide resources to the needy and ensure it’s being used efficiently. I worked in not for profit. I’m not donating my money, so some ceo of a “not for profit” can buy a new vacation home and BMW.

  30. Beautiful-Quality402 Avatar

Yes. I’d give most of my money away to my loved ones, charities and those in need. I’d make Brewster’s Millions look tame.

  31. heldonhammer Avatar

I would like to think I would. But to be honest, if I were the type of person who could become a billionaire I donno.

  32. MankuyRLaffy Avatar

Yeah, I’d help others with it.

  33. PABLOPANDAJD Avatar

I wouldn’t just “donate it to the homeless” all Willy-nilly, but I would definitely donate to specific charities after careful research, as well and starting some non-profits

  34. Darth_Eejit Avatar

Yup, gladly give away 90% of a billion and still have enough for me and those I care about to live easy fun lives.

  35. OhTheHueManatee Avatar

I’m under the impression you can achieve more creating an organization that helps the needy more so than just throwing money at them. That’s what I’d try to do if I was a billionaire. Plus it has the added benefit of getting people jobs. Of course if I had the resources I’d look into what would achieve the most good and do that.

  36. Fun_Organization3857 Avatar

Sort of. I would build sustainable resources. Working farms to produce food. Solar power to reduce or donate to power bills.

  37. -0-O-O-O-0- Avatar

Absolutely. I need deductions same as the next guy! Plus, how else will I promote my racism besides my brother in law’s fake charity?

  38. alldaylonggg Avatar

No, I’m not donating to any charity or organization, I’m all set. However, I do wish I could become a millionaire so I could dedicate my time to helping animals in need all over the world, as well as people who really humbly need assistance. That said, I’m more inclined to help innocent animals, and I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to help someone who is struggling with alcohol or drug addiction at 27. Sorry, not sorry.

  39. LowBook130 Avatar

Obviously I would say yes now but I think money just corrupts people so maybe I would become greedy then.

  40. MaxDiehard Avatar

No, because charities are a scam.

Use it to create the infrastructure and resources needed to make homelessness unnecessary.

  41. Unashamed_Outrage Avatar

Honestly, no, I wouldn’t donate money directly to homeless people if I became a billionaire. Homelessness is so much deeper than just not having money. It can be tied to mental health struggles, trauma, addiction, a broken system, and so many other things that money alone can’t fix.

What I would do is build a program that actually helps people get out of homelessness and stay out. Not just a band-aid solution, but something that systematically addresses the root causes…mental health care, job support, long-term housing, real community. Because let’s be honest, most current programs don’t work the way they should. They keep people in survival mode. And that’s not the same as helping someone rebuild their life.

If you want to make a real difference, you can’t just throw money at people. You have to give them hope. A way forward. A shot at something better. That’s what changes lives.

  42. Dawnzila Avatar

I will never be a billionaire like Elon because I can’t imagine being that greedy. Being a billionaire is a moral shortcoming to begin with.

If I had 362 billion dollars dropped on my lap, I would have a great time giving it away though. I would keep 100 million or so to live on and still have almost 362 billion dollars to give away.

  43. White_eagle32rep Avatar

I would donate big, but I would vet out the organization big time and making sure the money is actually going towards the cause.

  44. Weary_Repeat Avatar

Probably not i would probably take most of my money n try to do things to improve the quality of life of people. Like buy a pharmaceutical company n build cheap epi pens

  45. redditsuckshardnowtf Avatar

No I’d spend most of it on loose women, booze and motorcycles. I’d just blow the rest.

  46. edman007-work Avatar

    Donate to the homeless? No

In practice, I’d probably talk to bill gates, and give it to the gates foundation. Direct payments to the homeless isn’t the best use of my money.

I’d strongly consider political lobbying as I do think that’s a better use of my money for homelessness in the US. The government should support their citizens with their money, not rely on me to support them.

  47. No_Calligrapher_8508 Avatar

i wouldn’t even need to be a billionaire. if i suddenly woke up with anything more than $50M, i’d work on pet-friendly housing-first initiatives for veterans & lgtbq+ youth. $1M invested with a modest 4% rate for myself means i’d have $40k/yr to live off of, which is more than I need, so i’d have plenty to buy land or buildings, invest in infrastructure, build alliances with support services, etc.

Housing-first says “I don’t care if you have mental health challenges or chemical dependencies — if we solve the housing stressor FIRST, you’ll have more resources/mental bandwidth/spoons available to get the help you need for the rest of it.”

  48. BlueCanary1993 Avatar

I take care of others now and I’m broke.

  49. JGalKnit Avatar

I don’t need to be a billionaire. I would happily donate to many charities to provide help to all people. I mean, I would be fine with probably 20 million. The rest can go to a ton of charities. I might head them up so that I can see where the funds go and such, but no one needs that much money.

  50. FishingWorth3068 Avatar

I would fund every teachers Amazon wishlist I cane across, fund housing projects, fund homeless shelters and food banks, buy school supplies, put kids through college. I’d have a team of people that just found places for me to donate to good causes. Nobody needs that much money.

  51. WallabyMysterious367 Avatar

I hope I would. If not I’ll be the rich getting eaten.

  52. RoyalRobinBanks Avatar

I would create my own outreach programs (for the unhoused, non-religious addiction recovery, pet food bank ect.)

  53. BabyPeas Avatar

I mean, I would have fixed flint for sure. We forget that it was an honor in Ancient Greece and Rome to be able to build public works like aqueducts or temples. The rockerfellars built museums and buildings. We lost that altruism in the rich and the last time that happened, it was 1700s France.

  54. Dawbie_San Avatar

Everyone who says yes will never be a billionaire. It takes insane greed and an over compensating ideal of self importance to become a billionaire. Sure most have charitable foundations but most use those as tax write offs.

If you want to see a current billionaire who genuinely wants to help people look at MacKenzie Scott (Jeff Bezos’s ex wife). She married a guy who become a billionaire, once they divorced, she had billions of dollar that she didn’t have to destroy her soul and morality to obtain. So she’s out there donating billions and really trying to make a difference.

If top 10 richest people in the world wanted to end homelessness and world hunger they could do with a snap of their finger. If the top 1% truly wanted a utopia for all of mankind they could make it happen.

But sadly billionaires are not your friend, all they want to do is take, take, take, until they die. So with the few very rare exceptions, billionaires are inherently evil and anyone who says yes to this question and means it doesn’t have enough me first attitude to become a billionaire.

  55. Sad_Entertainer2602 Avatar

I’d give at least half of it away, probably more. There’s no way to be an ethical billionaire. Billionaires are pretty much the root of most of the world’s problems.

  56. Current-Lynx-3547 Avatar

Nope. Not even a penny. Especially to homeless people.

  57. Mission-Profession19 Avatar

No, what have the needy done for me?

  58. PastorBeard Avatar

I’m already donating to these things now and I’m closer to homelessness than a billionaire

  59. Physical_Bedroom5656 Avatar

I’d buy as many politicians as I could and buy or start several news outlets in order to make more significant changes for the better.

  60. Alien-Spy Avatar

I’d donate some amount obviously. But I’d likely spend more lobbying the government to pass more socialist laws

  61. TheInfiniteSlash Avatar

It’s one of those things that’s easy to say as someone who doesn’t have that kind of money. It’s different if you do have that kind of money.

Ultimately I would want to. The quality of my life is meaningless compared to being remembered in history for giving the most possible people a chance in the world.

It’s why despite my current work in data, I plan to run for congress and should the cards align, run for President. That’s the position in the world where I can truly make the world a better place. After consensus of course, I’d push to enrich the lives of everyone in the country.

If you are asking specific percentage if I am a billionaire? I’m donating 70% of that to charity, 20% into investments, and 9% into savings, 1% into checking.

  62. thortmb Avatar

I would donate whatever money I had so I never actually become a billionaire, billionaires shouldn’t exist.

  63. Deadlyfloof Avatar

I wouldn’t purely because I don’t trust charitable organisations and the fuckery that comes with them. Instead, I’d start my own foundations.

  64. PoseidonIsDaddy Avatar

No, because it’s unethical to try to buy politicians or compel people into doing what I want them to do.

A lot of people choose homelessness

  65. clong9 Avatar

If I had $1bn I would create a charity to spend $700m over a sustained period of time. I would hire some good people who know how to spend the money well.

With $300m left over I can make $10m a year from investments and live a great life. My children would live well and inherit a lot of money.

  66. Uter83 Avatar

If I had as much money as Musk Id end world hunger and create a super science research center with the stated goal of building the tech from Star Trek.

  67. HairyH00d Avatar

I’ve donated to the needy every month since I got my first job out of college so I would hope I’d do so if I was a billionaire as well.

  68. GlimmeringGuise Avatar

Once I have a nice house, and enough saved up to cover any and all living expenses I might have for the rest of my life, I’d double the amount I think I need just to be safe, then donate the rest to Unicef, Oxfam, local shelters and food banks, and other causes I believe in.

  69. The_Southern_Sir Avatar

    What about Ill-tempered sea bass?

  70. Due_Essay447 Avatar

    No. I don’t fw charity.

It is crazy that a homeless person contributing nothing gets more than someone who is working but underpaid.

I would put my money to ensure that those who actually contribute to society are treated fairly and are guaranteed a base standard of living. This should also incentivize those who aren’t working to do so.

  71. mojokick Avatar

If I WON or was GIVEN a billion dollars, then yes. I’d pick specific organizations with great track records of transparency and actually helping the community. I’d work with local/state orgs that focus on social issues like improving housing security, food banks, and career development for impoverished and minority communities, mental health programs for at risk youth and the lgbtq+ community, and addiction recovery programs.

If I MADE a billion dollars through some kind of work/investments, then probably not. People don’t become billionaires by having empathy and caring about other people. To make billions you would have to be capable of doing very unethical and self serving things. Billionaires only care about furthering their wealth, influence, and legacy.

    Eat the rich!

  72. gothicuhcuh Avatar

Everyone always tells me that I’d be the one to win the lottery and then end up on the news a year later bc I gave it all away. I don’t want money for mansions and cars. I want money so I can use my time on this planet to do some good I can’t do when I’m breaking my back for pennies to survive.

  73. DontxTripx420 Avatar

I’d probably lose my billionaire status over how much I’d be helping people out

  74. Coffey2828 Avatar

Definitely. There are many needy homeless dogs and cats out there. I would also donate to woman’s shelters not half but some money.

  75. princesscuddlefish Avatar

I would never be a billionaire because I would donate too much to maintain a billion dollars

  76. Effective_Cold7634 Avatar

    If I get over 100 billion, I’d 5-10b . But if it’s only 1 billion, then maybe a 100 mil .

  77. lio-ns Avatar

Absolutely, focusing on my local community first.

  78. jjmart013 Avatar

If Musk gave away 90% of his wealth his quality of life would not change a bit.

  79. No-Product-8791 Avatar

I would donate the vast majority of it to good causes that do good work. If I had a billion, I would donate about 997 million. The rest I would live off of the interest, and then have a living trust that gave what remained of it to those I care about after I died.

  80. malacosa Avatar

Sure, why not? With interest the small amounts (let’s say millions) would be peanuts. Honestly I don’t understand why most billionaires don’t donate more.

Maybe they do, but do it quietly because they don’t want the publicity?

I think I would also remain an anonymous benefactor.

  81. Round_Hat_2966 Avatar

Yes, but the implementation might take some time (assuming that I have $1B in the context of being a Corp founder or something similar). I would have to consider things like tax efficiency, whether donating such a substantial amount would affect my corporation/workers negatively (eg impacting leadership stake), whether to create a foundation to disburse donations, etc.

  82. Sweet_Speech_9054 Avatar

If I had that kind of money I would focus on fixing problems rather than throwing money at it. Teach a man to fish kinda stuff like making education more accessible or buying houses and selling them at a loss to help jumpstart generational wealth in low income communities.

  83. WeebyWabbyWoeby Avatar

Yeah, if I can make the world a better place then why not?

  84. Egaroth1 Avatar

See idk if donating per se I mean unless I see how the money goes. This is my own opinion based on my own observation a lot of charities tend to mismanage money and a small amount actually goes to its cause or the parts that directly affect it. (Yes I understand that it takes money where I might not consider it) but it is valid for example if it’s to build houses for homeless people I’d literally set it up where I go out and buy materials I’d hire people I know to do the work that type of thing

  85. EzriDaxwithsnaxks Avatar

    Would I donate money? Yes.
Would I donate money to most of these so called ‘charities’ that say they do the job but keep 85% of the money made? No.

I’d rather make my own business/charity that would help people. Had thoughts like this a couple of years ago looking at how the area I was living at.

    1. Get one of the huge empty department stores (preferably one of the ones that have a few floors) with some outside space. Basement: donated items + wholesale stock that has been brought (like toileteries, food etc), and washing machines and dryers (for the days it’s bad weather).

Ground floor: Reception and sitting area on one side (all nice looking with donated furniture or fixed furniture from the tip/charity shops) as well as cubbyholes for help, wherever its for filling paperwork, psychology/therapy or just help in general. Would also be a section for servers and/or paprrwork. Other side (semi closed off) would be made into a workshop to fix and/or strip old appliances for recycling (maybe work with the government to convert the recycled parts into cash to fund the project a bit more).

2nd floor would be a kitchen and dining area, with a play area for the children, and a mini library for all.

The last few floors above would be accommodation for those who need it (homeless, domestic abuse etc).

    1. In regards to people working for the company, it would be run by people who are in need. Got a skill? Come and work for me. We will find a way to utilise your skill, get you working for your pay and a place to sleep if you are homeless or in a situation that means you can’t go home. Catering would be done by volunteers cooking. All ingredients used would have some kind of barcode assigned to it so that allergens can be listed when a food item is prepared. Due to the mix of different people and cultures, there would be different meals each day, and possibly even a few fusion foods made.

    2. Outside area would be used for clothes lines, a play area for kids and gardening. Could work on growing our own vegetables and fruit and herbs, and possibly work with using rain barrels to work on watering the food. Volunteers can help with the garden, especially if they have a green thumb, and could also teach the kids on how to do gardening as a way to distract the kids from whatever happening in their life that is bad.

    3. Funding would be done via government grants, some stock market sales, and any appliances that have been scrapped/repaired and then sold. All money would go back into the company. Staff and volunteers would be paid enough to make sure they could live comfortably, but not too comfy that they don’t want to work anymore. I would put aside half a billion (if I had it) just for funding that.

  86. The_Monsta_Wansta Avatar

I don’t think I’d be a billionaire for long. I don’t need that type of wealth to live my simple life

  87. Wyprice Avatar

If I make it to a millionaire, I’d donate any money over a million I make probably to ACLU. I already think a million dollars is more than I’d need in my life, there’s no way in hell I would want a billion.

  88. Dexanth Avatar

Donate, yes, but it’d be to set up nonprofits/charities staffed by people I’ve hired for competence and mental agility, because it’s become clear that simply throwing money at problems does nothing unless the people using that money know how to use it well.

I live in California, so for example, I suspect my orgs would begin waging aggressive PR campaigns against anything standing in the way of us building massive highrise affordable housing. Japan already knows how to do this, and deals with similar natural disasters, so if it’s good enough for Tokyo earthquakes its good enough for here as well.

Anything that stands in the way of us helping people is an obstacle to be faced and overcome; ideally an obstacle turned into an ally, but I don’t care one whit about things like ‘neighborhood character’ or ‘The view’ or ‘Additional traffic’ if people are dying on the streets.

Infrastructure buildout is a genuine concern, but eminent domain exists for a reason and I can think of few better uses of it than to help those who are most in need of help, at the expense of wealthy people who already have too much.

  89. ooOJuicyOoo Avatar

I wouldn’t straight up donate. I’d set up institutions in perpetuity that can help change systems entirely as to provide the necessary support to avoid having so many left in need.

Robust education funds, food for the young, rehabilitation programs, etc.

And not gonna lie, I’ll use the very tool of greed against the system. I’ll lobby. Lobby for betterment of the system.

  90. manderifffic Avatar

I would be like Dolly Parton and never become a billionaire because I donate so much

  91. LiquidDreamtime Avatar

If I were a billionaire, I would buy plantations, destroy them, then build family homes on them to give to the black community in those areas.

I’d secure myself and my family financially for generations, and still have hundreds of millions left over to do my own version of reparations.

Similarly, I’d try to come up with a way to do this with indigenous lands as well. $1B doesn’t go that far when buying real estate, but I could change the lives of dozens of families I’m sure.

  92. Yiayiamary Avatar

Ten million for me, the rest for good causes. What on earth would I need that much money for.

  93. SpiritualCaramel7601 Avatar

Absolutly. The moment after I become a billionaire, is the moment I cease to be a billionaire.

  94. LondonDude123 Avatar

Find me a charity that legitimately actually helps the homeless and has a solid plan to eradicate homelessness, and I probably would…

    But you cant

  95. superkat21 Avatar

Donate – maybe. Depends on the programs. I would definitely have them vetted earnestly so I know the money is being used appropriately and in full. I’m not donating to another millio aire ceo bank account.

I’m more likely to create solutions of my own. With that kind of money I think I could create programs that have impact to make real change. It would be 100% non-profit and investigated regularly to keep it ethical and clean.

  96. kylanmama Avatar

I’d buy a town . Build a bunch of tiny homes and affordable apartments. Then all the necessities to support the town ie infrastructure, grocery, pharmacy, gas station, restaurants, healthcare, schools, stores. Then I’d invite working homeless individuals and families to live. Offer them a path forward. The town can grow with the people.

  97. hygsi Avatar

Once I’m set? I’d look for a way to better their education. I live in a country full of poor people, and some of them would spend their money in foolish ways rather than help themselves with food and shelter

  98. Turds4Cheese Avatar

No, donations are not as affective as building infrastructure to take care of people. Donate to their cause, yes. Throwing it on the street does very little for the problem.

Building multi family housing that is clean, safe, cheap/near-free, access to medical care (at least preventive for free) and offering employment opportunities. These are the things Elon can do that would really change this country… for the better.

Handing large sums of money to people without financial intelligence is just throwing it in the trash. But you can spend the money on improving their lives.

  99. Wolv90 Avatar

I would certainly look into charities and causes that either have a history of or a good plan to positively impact less fortunate groups and donate a portion of any liquid assets I have to that group. At a certain point after a lifetime of being okay financially (meaning not good, but not paycheck to paycheck) I’d be secure with a few million in retirement savings, a few to really enjoy, and the rest going to helping others.

  100. ShikonJewelHunter Avatar

    Don’t feed the squirrels.

  101. rbarr228 Avatar

Yes. I wouldn’t need to keep all the money, so humanity can benefit greatly.

  102. DocLego Avatar

    Nobody needs a billion dollars.

If I had that kind of money, I don’t know for sure how I’d give it away, but I’d definitely give away the majority of it over time. Probably keep a quarter billion, which is more than enough to buy anything I want and spend the rest of it making the world less annoying.

  103. MrRabbitSir Avatar

I’d take $1billion and use it as the start-up capital for a charitable foundation. I’d invest it into relatively safe high-yield dividend stocks(ex. dividend champions), and use the annual profits from those investments to create 529 accounts for babies whose births were subsidized through government programs(ie. Low-income newborns). Figure every year, just off the base investment, ~500 new 529 accounts would be created, each with $95k invested into SPY or VOO; which by the time the child turned 18 and started college would have grown to ~$650k. Then, once the child completed their Bachelors or Masters degree, $35k would be rolled into a Roth IRA for them, and the remainder of the funds reabsorbed back into the foundation and reallocated to new children.

Absolutely. At least 990 million if I have just 1 billion

  105. Throwaway03051012 Avatar

Yes. I think if we have the means, we should all be trying to leave this world a little better than how we found it. There are so many causes that people like him, Zuckerberg, and Bezos could fund that wouldn’t even put a dent in their wealth. They amass it as if they can take it with them. And they continue to live as if their children, their grandchildren, aren’t going to have to live on this planet as well.

  106. apex_pretador Avatar

No I will not donate. Instead I will travel to richer and more developed countries to seek medical care

  107. bricyclebri Avatar

No I wouldn’t give homeless people any money directly. That would promote the behavior that makes them homeless in the first place. I would be open to giving 10-20% of my income to charitable organizations that help homeless get out of their situations if I could find a righteous, genuine charity that does this. Not that I don’t currently believe those organizations exist, but I’m just not aware of any.

  108. Jocelyn-1973 Avatar

I will run a few programs helping the underprivileged to find their opportunities in life. But not with half of the money.

  109. danizatel Avatar

I wouldn’t donate directly, with that kind of money I’d seek to establish a system to providing housing to all in a community and then invest in doing that in communities across the country.

  110. Daelda Avatar

    I would do the following:

Open my own chain of food banks to supply food for the poor, and jobs for the unemployed.

Open a chain of veterinary clinics, which would provide pet care on a sliding scale, with free monthly neuter/spay programs.

Open a work-study program which gave training to poor/unemployed/teens/veterans in trade skills, and upon successful graduation, provided a tiny home on a small parcel of land (that they could not sell for 5 years – or they had to turn it back over to the program).

    Probably other charities as well.

Finally, I would have a will stipulating that 99.5% of my remaining wealth be used for funding these programs after I die (the final 0.5% would be divided among my family and friends).

  111. ZeraskGuilda Avatar

If I have muskrat money, I’m rendering the need for charities obsolete. Fuck the artificial scarcity. Fuck the deliberate inequities. No. There will be no more of that shit.

People get homes. People get food. They get fucking healthcare. They get fucking safe food and water. We as a species did not fucking struggle for thousands of years to get to a point where we could form civilizations and provide for each other and literally end scarcity only to fucking turn around and literally impose it.

Any that have the resources to end this shit but choose not to, are not human and should be treated as the parasites they fucking are.

  112. remnant_phoenix Avatar

Most definitely. Once I have savings and investment portfolio that is enough to live a comfortable upper-middle-class retired life to age 100 (just in case I live that long), I’m giving the rest of it away. What do I need any more money for?

  113. HeWhomLaughsLast Avatar

Sure, slap my name on every program and have the people praise my name. Egotistical sure but you don’t get to be billionaire by being a great person.

  114. IcyShirokuma Avatar

would offer jobs or opportunities instead of only donating seeing as providing a long term situation would help them massively

  115. Apprehensive-Toe6933 Avatar

I would donate to work study programs, upgrade current shelters in my area, but no I would not donate directly to the homeless. As most in my area are that way by choice or are not even actually homeless.

  116. Impossible-Two-4359 Avatar

Not only would I give a butt load of money, but I’d give my time each week as well.

  117. WeekendInner4804 Avatar

If I woke up tomorrow as a billionaire –

I would give $1million each to all of my and my partner’s families, and even to their partners/kids.

Like, my cousin’s 1 year old gets a million to sit in his bank account until he can access it. My sister who lives with her partner and 3 kids – that family get $5million…

Anyone further out than a cousin and their partner/kids doesn’t get anything.

That would equate to about $200- $250million gone.

I would spend some money to design and build my dream home. I’d also get a couple of vacation homes for different types of holiday – one vacation home near a tropical beach, one near a snow slope. I’d buy new cars for me and my partner, everything is paid in full, no mortgages or car payments, just taxes and insurance left to pay.

While the home is being built, I’ll travel the world until it’s ready, have that ‘once in a lifetime’ vacation, going to every continent, trying unique food and drink, exploring.

This might cost me another $10-15million, I don’t want anything stupidly extravagant, I don’t want a Bugatti, a fucking Rav4 fully paid off is good enough for me.

I’ll then put about $10million into my personal investments or savings, and live modestly off the interest for the rest of my life (If I can earn 4% that’s 400k a year – nearly 3 times more than the current combined salary of me and my partner, and likely more than I will spend in a year)

This is the absolute high end of what I need/want for myself.

Everything that is left over; $700-750-ish million is put into a charitable fund, I get final veto on yes or no to the causes it supports, but on a day-to-day basis, it’s someone else’s job to manage it, find causes and make the donations. I have absolutely no need or desire for that money. And if it’s managed right, the fund can grow and continue to support charities for decades.

  118. madmiah Avatar

Can I just be rich for five minutes?

  119. jarede36 Avatar

Of course I will. How else will I avoid paying taxes??

  120. Shylighthi Avatar

I know how it is the be low money wise near constantly, you better bet people wouldn’t even know i was rich, I woukd live happily and send excess to every other place I would. Damn, if I have Elon money, I’d make sure as many people as i could would live good lives

  121. Justaredditor85 Avatar

I would definitely donate part of my money to charities that I personally know to do good work and don’t have CEO’s that rake in 6 figures a year.

  122. False_Snow7754 Avatar

Definitely yes. I’ve had the thought experiment of what I’d do if I didn’t have to work anymore, and in 9/10 I’d start a Youth Centre with counselling and plenty of different activities, sports and.. stuff.

  123. BartholomewVonTurds Avatar

Yes. I will donate all my money except for 10 million. Then just disappear.

  124. slammed430 Avatar

I’d probably go about it different. I’d just be a mobile Mr beast. Dang you drive a clunker? Heres 50gs rando

  125. Big-Wrangler2078 Avatar

Hell yes. First, I would build myself a themepark where the main character is myself but as a terrible cartoon villain. All the staff would be dressed as my minions, I’d have a giant lair, on a hill, in the shape of my face, and my maniacal evil villain laughter would play throughout the themepark. I would write self-insert superhero fiction where I secretly run the world in the background. Maybe an anime. All that nonsense.

And every time I donated money, I would tweet about my terrible, evil plans, and how donating money to this particular cause was actually part of my really convoluted plot of world domination and the world is eating our of my hand, mu ha ha ha ha. Tongue in cheek, of course. Just as a PR stunt. And every time someone criticized me, I would just point out the fact that I’m obviously, openly terribly evil, and who can argue with that?

Frankly, I believe Elon is missing out on the real way to become a successful megalomaniac. With all the goodwill I’d be getting for my generous donations, I would be able to slowly expand my network, and actually become the invisible shaper of the world >:)

  126. marksocials97 Avatar

I’d do my own good deeds, pay for people’s groceries that are behind me in line, pick up tabs for people that are in the same restaurant as me, hand out money to homeless on the street, etc.
I think that’s more effective than just signing a check to a random charity

  127. TheBlackRonin505 Avatar

If I possessed the wealth of someone like Elon, I would start fixing shit on instinct.

  128. Procrastubatorfet Avatar

Inevitably some yes. But I’d try to occupy my days by finding neglected heritage structures and refurbishing them or donating to councils/organisations that are trying to do just that. It’s like my day job but without doing much of the actual work.
So many things could be better with more money and I could help people afford to do them, but I wouldn’t say these sorts are ‘needy’ they’re more ‘wanty’

  129. Isolated_Hippo Avatar

Yes. But I would do it in some weird way.

Like build a giant ass apartment building. Luxury apartments. Go telling the world how beautiful these apartments are going to be. The ultimate life of luxury. Gym. Pool. Amenities out the ass.

Then last second be like oh yeah low income/homeless only.

  130. Ineedmoneyyyyyyyy Avatar

Yeah. Don’t believe me. Venmo me that billion

  131. Away_Letterhead_4220 Avatar

I’d try to create jobs, to maintain the wealth and help those in need for a longer term. Donating is an opportunity wasted.

  132. cakebreaker2 Avatar

Donate money directly? Likely not. I’d buy things that people need and distribute that stuff. Like free food and clothes and homes. But not cash.

  133. Puzzleheaded_Text357 Avatar

Not directly. Not because I don’t want to give away the money, but because a non-zero number of people would use it for drugs/gambling/etc, and i feel like doing other things wouls benefit more people in the long run.
Instead I would donate to other things. Maybe construct cheap, nice housing with all of the basic necessities. Give money to build/fund schools and hospitals for less fortunate people. I do the same thing all over the world over and over.
I’ll just keep doing this until i reach about 1 billion or half a billion and retire. Maybe become Ironman with my spare time. Although I might need to save more than just 1 billion.

  134. Abystract-ism Avatar

    Yup.
Set up some scholarships, pay off some medical debts anonymously, buy land and put it in a trust to keep some open spaces/habitat around…

  135. Poodleape2 Avatar

100% no. I would cease all charitable actions.

  136. pipesed Avatar

If I become a billionaire it won’t be for long. The coexistence of extreme wealth and extreme poverty is a sign the system has failed

  137. JonnySouthPaw Avatar

Reddit is so full of financial ignorance that’s it’s staggering. Billionaires don’t have billions in their checking accounts you dolts. They have a net worth on paper that fluctuates. They can’t give away that much all at once even if they wanted to. And fuck the homeless, I’d donate to cancer research or something like that.

  138. Yakusaka Avatar

    I don’t know.

  139. Corey307 Avatar

Of course, I would set up dozens of trust fund various charities around the world. I’m a lower middle class person that used to work for rich people and I have no desire for that lifestyle. Yeah, I’d buy a big farmhouse on 10,000 working acres, new car and travel the world, but I don’t need billions for that.

  140. East-Ordinary2053 Avatar

Of course.i will also pay politicians more than the other guy to pivot to doing good for the country, too

  141. Rivvien Avatar

Donate to or create programs which help end the causes of homelessness with the money instead of directly, yeah. No one needs to hoard elon levels of money ever.

  142. FakeSafeWord Avatar

You make me a Billionaire and I’ll become the actual thing Elon was supposed to be AND I won’t lie about how shit I am at POE 2.

I will spend every dollar of it for good, except for like 10 million for my personal cocaine-retirement fund.

  143. WendigoCrossing Avatar

I would work on a project to set up a renewable fund that offers housing and services and show how that coupled with mental health services is not only ethical and humane but also a cheaper solution

I would also avoid homeless shelters and instead set them up in apartments. This would both:

    A) combat Not in my backyard folks as they would be spread out

    and

    B) offer a dignified way for people to get back on their feet without the stigma, and even setup an option for them to continue their current renting situation if they want to stay upon getting back on their feet

  144. TwiceBakedTomato20 Avatar

No. I’d start my own charity that would ensure 100% of the proceeds actually go to those who need it. I cannot tell you how mad it makes me that the money generally doesn’t.

  145. Thick-Disk1545 Avatar

Im never going to become a billionaire because the people who become billionaires wouldn’t spend money on the needy that’s who they are and it’s not who I am

  146. Artos9780 Avatar

I wouldn’t donate half of my money because it would be more beneficial for me to turn it into investments so I can continuously keep growing my income which in turn will allow me to donate large amounts more often
