Women who switched careers in your early 30s, what was your experience?

Bonus if you switched from a creative field to law / something else that required additional degrees

I switched from teaching to HR, got a master’s in HR management and the SHRM-CP, currently still looking for a job, might go back to school online for another master’s in I/O psych. It’s rough switching careers in your 30’s. I keep getting teaching offers. The best I can do right now is an admin/coordinator position at a school. But it isn’t HR.

Wonderful. What was I waiting for?

I was a government cog and it was soul crushing.

Now I’m in corporate bookkeeping/financial/ payroll.

I realized I always loved figuring out the errors in payments or instances of fraud way more than anything else in social services. Went back to school for new degree in accounting.

It’s been a great lesson in you can do anything you put your mind to! Who knows, I may even switch careers again one day. It’s nice to make a bit more money and have a ladder to climb, since what I’m after is eventually financial safety and job security

I went from admin to driving a taxi. I enjoyed it!

Mid 30s I guess. I was newly 34, newly married, newly quit the grad program, and newly laid off from the job in my field due to it being computerized. I went from an environmental desk job to being a nanny. I’m 42 now and enjoy it a lot. It has its ups and downs in terms of money but I’m getting by. I do miss my old life and I have thoughts of going back to school but I have ptsd from grad school so I’m working with a therapist to help me deal with it.

I went from warehouse work and dog training to accounting. Made me want to pursue a degree in it even!

I went from working on a project team in corporate retail to being an admin assistant at a school district. A lot less pay, but also a lot less stress. Totally worth the change.

I went back to school to completely change career fields into healthcare. I’m doing it for stability and career growth. Making more money than before and I enjoy helping people. So it’s been great. I wouldn’t say it is my passion but jobs in my passion would require me to move and wouldn’t be stable. I might volunteer when I’m older though in my previous field (environmental education and conservation).

I’m not 30 -yet- but I will be when I graduate and I’m TIRED. I have two young kids, I work full time and I school full time 😪 I’d give to have a weekend off but it’s the benefits im trying for, trying to give my kids the life I never got. It worked for my mom, the chances are good it’ll work for me AND I’ll get the benefit of sharing it with my kids. Where I was already an adult when my mom graduated

I switched from being a banker, then went back to school, got divorced (he left me after I quit my job… real winner). Got my degree and now I work in corporate wellness for a large city government.

It’s FANTASTIC! I love my job and I love what I get to do. I’m lucky that I get to do what I like and I I also have pretty good pay, benefits, etc

I switched from a creative career to a nursing career in my late 30s, then got a PhD. I’m an academic research scientist now. It’s pretty fantastic.

I worked in retail and restaurants/bars/breweries immediately after high school and up to today. I was encouraged (strongly) to get an Associates degree in a healthcare field, believing it would be a more effective use of my skills and a more financially stable career. I graduated at 30, right in the middle of the COVID shutdown in 2020. I didn’t get work in that field until 2021, and I managed to stick with it for two years until my mental health tanked and I left it completely. I returned to school to get my Bachelor’s degree (I chose English), and I continued to work as a server and bartender during this time.

I just received a job offer today for a sales position. I’m new to sales, but I’ve been told many times I’d do well with my personality. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m optimistic.

I was a full time degenerate/retail/restaurant worker. Started going to community college when I was 27. Graduated with a few political degrees at 32. Immediately got into tech.

Human services to auditing in my mid-30’s after going to college in my late 20’s. Getting a job after graduating wasn’t difficult and my salary has only increased since the switch.

Slowly shifting gears back to my passion job aka an artist. It kinda fell into my lap-ish. I have a degree in it but it fell flat 10 years ago so I pursued a stable position. Now I am able to work part time as an artist and my stable job as I’ve been selling my work consistently every month. It has been the best thing for my mental health and confidence

I went from being a geologist (working fifo/coal fields exploration in Central QLD), back to uni and did a Master of social work.

It was glorious. While I still love science (and have a huge rock collection) my heart is far more in social work. I now work for a peak body for aged care and still use my analytics/research from science days all the time and think they give me a unique approach to my work.

If you’re considering it, the leap was scary but excellent.

Worked healthcare up until Covid, then got completely burnt out and started bartending, I make more money and I have more time to do the things I actually enjoy.
