Women with nipple piercings, what is something you wish you knew before you got it done?

What do you love about them or what cons are there?

How crusty they can get, and if you sleep on your stomach they will heal crooked

  2. sickofsitting Avatar

Not many cons that I’ve come across but last night I wore a shirt to bed that had slits in it and got woken up by one of the slit bits being caught up in the piercing. It wasn’t particularly painful but it took me a hot minute to figure out wtf was going on.

  3. lemonwife Avatar

They basically never heal. Had mine since I was 18 and I’m 24 now. Anything stronger than a slight breeze will reopen the wound.

  4. AcceptablyAlien Avatar

They are difficult to heal and I had to clean them constantly. Any hands on from my partner and I would immediately go and clean them afterwards so they didn’t get infection. I took mine out after a year because they were always agitated. Not sure if this is everyone’s experience. They were super cute though.

Honestly if you‘re considering getting them, don‘t overthink it. I pierced my own as a teenager and still have them, nothing crucial to know, exactly what you‘d expect. Makes you feel confident and when you‘re sick of them, you can just remove them, the lasting scars are not too noticable.

  6. AnonymousPineapple5 Avatar

I took mine out after like a year lol they got caught in everything and I found them to be generally uncomfortable

  7. Brightpenguin101 Avatar

It was already said, but seriously, they are SO hard to heal. I had mine for almost 10 years, and every time it did heal, it would get bad again after a few weeks. It was like starting all over again all the time. I finally took it out 2 years ago, and I can still feel where it was, not sure if it’s real pain or a phantom pain.

  8. generatrisa Avatar

Monthly hormone changes can make them angry, even years after getting them. I’ve had mine for 12 years now and while I’d consider them healed, a bad PMS week can make them crusty and angry all over again sometimes.

  9. AcanthisittaIll869 Avatar

They will always be crusty. Make sure you have the correct metal bar!! They definitely are a chore but so worth it

  10. HerbanKitty Avatar

How long they take to heal! Took mine a little over a year.
Also, chilling bra-less at home means holding my nipples when walking through door frames. I’m a little clumsy and unaware, I got them caught a handful of times before I learned I need to cover them for safety. I’ve had them pierced for over 10 years now and have to stop myself at work walking through doors because I’m wearing a bra and attracting weird attention.

How often I hit my breasts on objects without noticing 😅

  12. Altanariel Avatar

How sensitive the nipple is after !!

  13. HyenaDependent2928 Avatar

If you have trypophobia, don’t do it. Heard a girl talking about it with a friend right before I got it done, so I’m grateful. I’ll never do it now 😂🩵

  14. feeelyelloww Avatar

Wait I’ve had zerooo issues with mine. Didn’t realize they were notoriously hard to heal. Barely ever notice the piercing (doesn’t snag on stuff)

  15. VelvetScone Avatar

I had mine for 6 years, they never healed. They’d reopen or start crusting or swell very randomly, through various different types of jewelry just in case it was an allergy. Nothing seemed to help. Consulted doctors and several different piercers. Also seemingly permanently altered my nipple sensitivity.

NSFW a little here but; pre-piercing I absolutely loved nipple related ..activities. Post-piercing, they are both less sensitive and have triggered “sad nipple syndrome” so if they’re touched even slightly wrong I will feel sick to my stomach. I took them out three years ago and am still sad about the loss of sensitivity.

  16. Corgi_with_stilts Avatar

Sometimes the rings show through thin or tight clothing, sometimes they get knocked and hurt a bit, gotta keep the skin and the ring clean…. other than that, I’ve had few problems.

  17. GenuineClamhat Avatar

Holes worn in bras with certain hardware. And if you like nice underwear… This gets expensive fast.

  18. girliepopnumber26 Avatar

important lesson i learned afterwards is never brush your long hair while topless!

  19. VegetableBorn1499 Avatar

I’ve been told they taste like house keys. 😵 Also, people can see that they’re pierced, if it’s cold or you wear a thin bra, I’ve had a lot of coworkers do double-takes, maybe not the most professional thing.

  20. lini_bagel Avatar

how much hair gets tangled around them when you shower 💀

  21. ConsistentPair2 Avatar

I got mine pierced way back in the early 90s. When I reached my late forties, boobs weren’t the same as when I was in my twenties, and I didn’t like the way my piercings looked anymore, and took them out. I didn’t realize that the empty holes would be sort of like permanent zits or blackheads. Every so often I need to squeeze gunk out of them. It’s not painful, doesn’t really affect my day to day life. But when I notice them while soaking in the bathtub, I chuckle to myself and think, “If I knew then what I know now, I would not have made the same choice.”

  22. WistfulMelancholic Avatar

I don’t have anymore unfortunately (took out for pregnancy).

Honestly it was as uncomplicated as can be. Didn’t hurt (I’m great at taking pain in general but imho nose piercing hurt and nipples didn’t!). Healed perfectly within a month. Never infected. Never uneasy to touch. Thinking about te piercing but idk about if that’s possible.

I’d start with a banana shaped piercing. A ring is too much material for beginning and the straight piercings are uncomfortable imho. The banana ones are perfect to clean and heal with, imho. Once healed you can go wild, ofc.

And definitely tell a possible partner to not pull on them if you don’t like that! Many people assume you’d must like that and that’s why you got them in the first place.

  23. rubymoon9 Avatar

I’m at 1.5 years with mine and they are finally healed, they do not bleed, and being a little rough with them doesn’t cause discomfort as long as I’ve kept them clean and removed crusties. On that note, you will forever have crusties even once healed. Gently clean them away once or twice a day in the shower or with wet qtips, keeps my skin from getting irritated. One of my nipples has always gotten erect more often than the other one, maybe it has better blood flow, and it healed slightly faster which I found interesting. Get rid of your loofah, no loops for dangerous washing in the shower while healing. I miss my loofah but have had no unfortunate shower incidents and I’m happy with a washcloth or exfoliating glove. Chunky knit sweaters will allow the piercings to poke through braless lol, but I can go braless in anything with a fine enough knit that I’m comfortable being a little pokey in. There is a ton of cute jewelry out there but I’m nervous about anything other than implant grade titanium. This for sure restricts some options but there are great sellers with cute ones and I don’t want to risk an allergy, I know from my ear piercings my skin is a little sensitive. Body Art Forms is widely regarded as reputable and I have purchased from them, make sure to use the material type as a filter on their website. I have heard good things about Etsy seller Bodyclickers as long as you choose an appropriate material for your skin, she has implant grade titanium. Do not rush to change your jewlery, except maybe your piercer helping downsize early on after swelling. It is not worth it to traumatize the healing piercing. I waited a year, maybe that was overly cautious but it felt totally safe and I had no issue. Use the new jewelry to push out the old jewelry so there’s no gap or extra pressure on the piercing hole. Use some sterile saline or antibacterial soap to clean the jewelry and to lubricate the jewelry change. Only get internally threaded or threadless/push pin.

    Antibiotics cured it all

  25. Responsible-Jello271 Avatar

I wish I knew what to look for with my body rejecting the piercing. I didn’t know that was a thing and one of mine tried to reject the jewelry. I just assumed it was a difficult healing process for that side.

I ended up taking them out after getting married since my ex husband didn’t like them but now I’m considering getting them redone. I’m just nervous about piercing scar tissue

  26. Maddyyykay Avatar

I didn’t realize I was in the minority until reading these comments but as someone with a larger chest, I had absolutely no problems with healing. I don’t know that those two things correlate, but figured it couldn’t hurt to shout out.

Mine have been in for 11 years and I barely think about them. They’re the most low maintenance piercings I have by far!

  27. bubblebeegum Avatar

That you have to continually maintain and clean them. I’ve been pierced for 3+ years and still use a piercing saline spray twice a day to limit irritation and prevent buildup. [Crusty shouldn’t be the status quo, imo.] The spray also soothing if I happen to snag them on something.

  28. Dance_of_Cassiopeia Avatar

Mine felt honestly healed after 2 weeks and I was able to change the jewelry by myself without any problem after a month! I’ve had them for a year now and they’ve never caused me any issues. I LOVE LOVE LOVE them!!!! I think you just have to find a good piercer :-))

  29. Affectionate_Elk5167 Avatar

I love mine! Took approximately a century and a half to heal, but once they did, they’re great! Plus, as someone who leans into kink sexually, never had a man upset by the piercings. 🙃

  30. TheWaywardwaif Avatar

I had to take mine out for a mammogram. After several hours without bars, I could not get any to go back in. Friends who had theirs done said changing bars was really hard but any length of time without a piercing in meant one wasn’t going back in.

  31. imtooldforthishison Avatar

They never close and you have to clean them for eternity.

I had mine done 20 something years ago and took them out when I was 7month pregnant with my son because I wanted to breastfeed. I was cleaning them a few months back, still, and was like “hmmmm… lemme try.” and sure enough I was able to scooch jewelry straight through with no pain (the right one did experience a few days of irritation). My son, ya know, the breast fed kid, he’s 19 years old now.

I do find it much easier to just keep them in at this point. It’s much easier to clean than with the bar in place, than it is to express the goop out. Yes, they do get goopy just like your ears do. One of my extra kids told me she wanted hers done and asked if I would go with her so we had the whole conversation about it being a lifetime commitment even if you do take them put at some point.

    1. Make sure you don’t get ‘cold’ while it’s healing as that’s an experience.
    2. Always need to be super careful when using a loofah. Any distraction can cause a moment where your life flashes before your eyes.
Aside from that, I love mine it’s pretty much the only piercing I’ve kept
  33. aimeelles Avatar

Looks sexy, but healing’s long careful with tight tops!

  34. unofficiallynxl Avatar

I have not had any cons and I’ve had mine for a few years now. They really don’t get that crusty. I barely remember I still have them. The only thing I can think of is that some men find it difficult to suck, but that’s only some.

  35. 120721 Avatar

I had mine in for about 4 years I think? They were totally fine for the first 3ish then could constantly be irritated and would catch on everything all the time which was painful and created a constant cycle of irritation. I also wish I had considered the impact it would have on breastfeeding. I have a 2 week old and while it’s not a huge huge deal, I have noticed the holes where my piercings were do create a more messy breastfeeding experience since they allow a lot more milk to flow out faster than the rest of the nipple.

  36. InternationalTowel82 Avatar

Mine did take a while to fully heal, but not a decade like some of these comments – I’m not surprised though, everyone’s body is different and will react accordingly 😅 I got them pierced right at 18 and I’m barely 23 and a half, they’ve been “fully” healed for at least a year or two.

But they do get crusty once in a blue moon if I snag them on something, etc. Warm salt water soaks were a godsend for healing!

  37. Firm-Raspberry9181 Avatar

It can mess with breastfeeding a child. I took mine out and it still wasn’t closed up a decade later.

  38. Coffeecoffeecoffeexo Avatar

The worst aspect for me has been accidentally getting them caught on a fabric or loofah.

The process of obtaining the piercings and the healing after was actually one of my easier piercing experiences. By month two, it seemed properly healed, and I had no issues like pain, reopened wounds, or discomfort.

A hoop was used, and I later switched to a straight bar.

  39. GanacheWitty9525 Avatar

They go off at airports 😆

  40. username12457801 Avatar

I remember the lady who did the piercings tried to make me feel better about the decision by saying “the only way for them to get infected is if you don’t shower… like I would JUDGE someone if they told me their nipple piercings got infected because I would immediately assume they aren’t hygienic”

I wash my body 1-2 times a day (depending if I go to the gym that day), my nipple piercings have gotten infected and I think it’s because of the type of metal. But now I’m scared to ask a piercer bc I don’t want them to immediately think I’m some disgusting person that doesn’t take showers regularly.

  41. gravyjonesisafatgirl Avatar

I took mine out during pregnancy (5 years ago now).
Last month I wore a new bra when jogging and got a friction burn that then turned into a staph infection inside the nipple where the bar once sat.
It was so sore and burst whilst asleep. The smell was horrific.
I now have to make sure my chest is strapped down and nips covered with vaseline.
Apart from that I loved mine 😅

  42. Strange_Difference26 Avatar

Change the damn thing. Got pierced and i was too scared to change the jewelry until it got infected (i washed it everyday just didn’t took it out) and there was a blob of dead skin and dead white cell on the pin i had a hard time taking it out. Almost fainted. I know I was dumb

  43. sugarsodasofa Avatar

How itchy they are when they contract. 0/10 recommend in the winter

  44. halfasianprincess Avatar

Took mine out years ago but had them for a while- be careful brushing your hair! That shit hurts.
