So I worked for my FIL in insurance in CO for a year. I had a small book of business but never really took off since the area we lived in was small. I did network though and was able to meet some people who had high primium contracts, one in Colorado Springs and one in silverthorn, both HOAs. I was working both when I moved to Florida with my wife. I continued to work with FIL in Florida and work those clients. Unfortunately we were unable to sign them before their renewal and I was told that was pretty much that. Father in law insisted that should start my own LLc in Florida, and under his direction I did, signed a contract that I was a subsidiary of his company so I could do insurance in Florida. Florida is not a great state for insurance right now though as a smaller firm and it never took off and I had to get a second and then third job eventually dropping the insurance to work two full time jobs to make ends meet. This weekend I met up with some of my friends from CO and one of them was one of my clients that had the biggest contract, just shy of 1 million in premium, And congratulated me and I asked why. Turns out FIL circled back and signed both those big contracts I had after I had left and I haven’t received any communication from him that he has, let alone any form of financial compensation. Am I entitled to compensation? Even if it’s not the full commission premium, a referral? I want to reach out and ask him about it but am worried that could make things worse.

Without a contract in place, there is likely no legal obligation he has to you if you left before he closed their policy a year later.
