Hi everyone. I am a white 27(F), and I live in the Deep South. I grew up in a southern Baptist church, and it really left a bad taste in my mouth. I haven’t been to church in about 10 years. However, I really really miss being in a choir, and I want to explore my spirituality a little more.
The town I’m in unfortunately does not have a community choir. However, there are a TON of churches.
While they aren’t legally segregated, it has always been kind of known that there are black churches and then there are white churches. I was wondering if it would be completely out of line for me to go a black church one Sunday. The music is 1000000x better to me in black churches. I absolutely hate the hillsong white church music. However, I really don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable and intrude on a time that is sacred to the black community. Im sure this varies from church to church, but any advice or tips are welcome.

Would it be okay for a black person to join a white church?
Amen!
Talk to the pastor and ask him to introduce you to someone in the choir, and go with your instincts from there.
You’ll figure it out pretty quick. No harm, no foul, and you have good intentions. Let them shine!
As a former churchgoer the more the merrier. There’s a saying to come as you are and they truly wouldn’t care that you’re white. I live in PA but I went to a black and Latino church, the only white people there were the pastor and his family and we adored them. Enjoy the music, food, and community!
Talk to someone from the choir. It doesn’t have to be the Director. Explain your concerns exactly as you put it in your post. They’ll get it.
