One thing I find mind boggling about conservatives is how if Republicans went against their beliefs, most of them would either go along with them or abstain from voting. They would still never Democrat and against Republicans, not actually opposing what is supposedly against their beliefs.
If Republicans were more aligned with your beliefs, would you vote for them? Why is it the case that if Democrats were more aligned with conservative beliefs they still wouldn’t vote for them or abstain?

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.
I’m going to guess that people in this sub would vote for people that align with their belief system.
If republicans voted in line with my belief system they would no longer be republicans.
If the question is am I tied to a name, fuck no, I would happily vote republican if they had my values.
If I had shitty and selfish beliefs, sure.
I’d just be voting for a Democrat then at that point. Being a member of different parties means that you have a distinct ideology/belief in how things should be.
If that Republican happened to align with my beliefs, then they’d just be a Democrat.
I vote on platform, not on labels. I wish more people did the same.
In theory yes, I would vote for anyone who represents my values (it’s not a ‘belief’). But now that the GOP are the PPP, a big no for them specifically.
Conservatives value loyalty over truth, so they stick within group confines at the expense of other things. Liberals and left wingers value truth and don’t really value group membership.
Honestly, I don’t get the question…because Republicans say one thing and then do/act another way. So for anyone paying attention, it’s hard to know what their belief system is. I mean, would it just be them saying things that are more leftist and then still turning around and acting heartless, racist, evil, raping people? If so, no.
I think you misunderstand this even from the perspective of republicans. The reason they continue to go along with them is because despite the issue on some belief, the GOP is still better aligned with their overall beliefs, so they continue to vote GOP.
Any Republican who’s beliefs aligned even with 50% of my own would not be allowed in the Guardians Of Pedos.
As for the second part, FOX “News” and anyone contributing to the egregious misinformation campaign that has been going on for 50+ years.
If they aligned with my beliefs they wouldn’t be fucking Republicans.
Theoretically sure.
It’d take some wild turn of fate to get there, but I’m not beholden to the name of the party.
If someone were to run as a Republican, express similar beliefs to mine and was making a name for themselves I’d initially assume they were lying especially if the rest of the party wasn’t crucifying them at every moment. I’d have to research into them before I would consider voting for them. Not sure what I’d have to see to change my vote. But I wouldn’t put it out of the realm of possibility.
They’ve had literally no policy proposal or introduced bills that would help Americans in any way since the 20th century.
The only reason people continue to support Republicans is because of “tradition,” that is, their family voted that way.
I’m yet to see a single piece of legislation proposed or passed from Republicans that benefit Americans.
This isn’t some team sport. I don’t vote for Dems bc I grew up watching my parents vote for Dems.
If a person running for office had liberal values, and their history proves this, but they are running as a Republican, I’d wonder why they are aligned to the Conservative Party. Can they only win as a GOP candidate in their district?
Before 2016, I’d consider them. After 2016, any person running as a GOP candidate, I would never vote for them. I’d probably abstain in that race. Unless there comes a time when any liberal party is outlawed, I will never vote for a conservative.
I am not complicit with fascists. The party completely destroyed their brand.
I’m an independent who happens to have liberal beliefs. You have to earn my vote, at the very least for being better than the other guy. Who the f cares about party?
Why would I care what they call themselves?
If they aligned with my beliefs they wouldn’t be Republicans anymore, so this seems like a distinction without a difference? Like what would a republican who agrees with an unapologetic communist look like exactly?
My core political beliefs, social to economic to defense to all the rest are pretty antithetical to the Republican Party as it currently exists
Yes and I would marry a serial killer if they were perfect in every way and didn’t kill people
Sure- it’s not about the party name, it’s about aligned values.
I’m still trying to make sense of your opening couple of sentences. Mainly this is because Republican politicians actually respond to their voters’ demands, because they have actually meaningful primary contests without nearly the amount of “electability FUD” and other propaganda bullshit the Democratic Party uses to keep their voters in line. Eventually the party looks like what their voters actually want. They wouldn’t vote for a conservative Democrat because there is certainly a more right-wing Republican to choose from, every time.
Yes. If the GOP became a more Liberal party i’d vote for them more, and the amount I vote for them would increase the more they align with my beliefs.
I don’t support pedophiles under any circumstance, so no.
Yeah I would. And my beliefs are that education is important and that we shouldn’t let economic and social inequality get out of hand because then society will not be safe.
The problem is that Republicans don’t seem to be honest about their true intentions. They run on one thing then do a bunch of things when they get in office that they never talked about before.
Of course. It’s not like I just like the letter D.
Sure. But at this point, there’s nothing I see on the platform that I’d want. Anything that they were known to protect they’ll happily suspend for people like me based on discretion. Like going down the issues:
First amendment; Trump’s admin makes a mockery of it with how Senator Padilla was treated. If they had the same tact of Biden’s admin they wouldn’t be them.
Guns; personally I think ownership is crucial at times so their current stance suits me rather fine I guess, but truly few dems have made this a sticking point where I live so not a big decision to consider.
Abortion; this is the one time I would agree with Libertarians that the government has no place in the decision making process, but the evangelical bloc won’t allow that, so there’s no appeal for me to vote republican
Universal healthcare, the only republican even in the ballot park here is Mitt Romney, and that is still not my policy goal. Dems do little better, but there’s at least Andrew Yang, Bernie, and AOC floating it in discussion.
DC and Puerto Statehood: minority ruling style of republicans makes this a nonstarter.
Immigration; the obvious two solutions are expanding the legal pipeline so more can become legal citizens in the first place and not living here illegally. The current policy for ICE is anathema.
Others said it too, but aligning with me would mean not being republicans. Polarity, not moderation is the name of the game right now.
Yea that’s kind of how voting works lol
Not on the national level, but on the local level, where the ideological difference is almost non existent, yes.
Republicans on the national level are just way too ideologically extreme. So I’d likely never vote for one as President or in Congress. But let’s see. In 2028, the candidate who actually promotes secular, liberal, ordinary people politics is getting my vote in the primary on either side. I basically want young Joe Biden honestly. If that’s a Republicans in 2028, so be it.
Yesss I will vote for the best candidate that I have in front of me that will help the people, the working class and protect basic human rights.
100% would. If their parties switched platforms again and aligned with my values (not beliefs).
Sure. It’s not the word “Republican” that bothers me about them.
If republicans became progressive & they were able to PROVE it & not just grifting for votes, then yes i would, but im such a deeply distrustful person that i don’t believe almost anyone so i think that would also keep me from voting for republicans still
I don’t particularly care about party. If Republicans changed and started promoting good policy/stopped the corruption – yes I’d vote for them. My problem isn’t that they’re Republicans, it’s their policies and actions.
yeah, but they wouldn’t be republicans. you don’t see a lot of people like AOC and Bernie who are republicans
Bro every presidential election I’ve gotten to vote in has had Trump on the ballot. I wish we had a reasonable alternative.
I’ve analyzed this crap all I need to, going back to the 1st presidential election I ever voted in, which would be like 1971. What has happened, upsides, downsides, the economies, major world events, outcomes, how many times each side won, how many years each side has been in control, and more.
I will NEVER EVER vote for a fukkin Republican again in my life. They’ve laid too much damage and waste to our economy, our health (now the world’s too), and have created far fewer jobs than they claim. But don’t take my word – do your own independent study. Just look at the period of time YOUR LIFE spans. Compare. Don’t just look at current stuff. Broaden the scale – look at your parents lifespan. Read what the world’s economic analysts say, distance yourself from the MSM & social media whie you do this. Don’t tell others – your in an analysis mode. You have ONE YEAR to do this B4 the next big election. So find out for yourself if your beliefs are conviction for you.
Report back in a year, pls.
No, I wouldn’t vote for pedophiles regardless of any political ideas they claimed to support.
I would admit I’d be more skeptical – just because I have very liberal and occasionally socialist beliefs. I like big government, taxes, welfare, diversity, immigration, abortion access, socialized healthcare, and strongly believe the only point of a society is to make sure all citizens are provided for. Basically ideas that are the exact opposite of what I understand the modern republican party to stand for.
I would be open to looking at their stances and supporting them especially if the challenging democrat was a zionist bootlicker or against taxing the rich. But I’d be skeptical that a republican candidate would support my views without some sort of catch like they want to ban abortion or pass anti-trans legislation.
Sure. I am not a Democrat because I love the name lol.
Not sure why I’m getting downvoted. I’ll vote with whatever party aligns with my beliefs. I’m not attached to a party name.
Yes. Particularly in local elections there have been actual moderate republicans with no shitty social hot takes that have wanted to reduce spending and property taxes that I’ve been interested since
It’s not like I have never agreed with a Republican. I am pro-capitalism and for balancing the budget. But MAGA today has nothing to do with fiscal matters. I think Democrats are the fiscal conservatives now. And Republicans are no longer for “states rights” either. I’m not even sure if they ever really stood for anything at all, other than hate.
Absolutely not.
The red R tells me what the baseline of their beliefs actually are and that’s a non starter for me.
Whatever they say on the campaign trail would just be campaign lies and deceptive populism.
Even in California where republicans running for state office are very centrist, you know they are a maga when it matters.
I’ll vote for anyone regardless of party affiliation that aligns with my beliefs. And one of the lines I am now drawing is at materially supporting a state the is actively conducting a genocide.
Yes, I mean I care more about some issues than others so it would depend some what on which beliefs rather than just the absolute number of beliefs, but I am voting for an ideology not a team.
I think it’s likely you are misunderstanding what is going on with Republicans if you think they are operating differently. Firstly republicans choose the lesser of two evils as well. Just because they disagree with Republicans doesn’t mean they agree with Democrats. Secondly, most people just care about a few things and more or less adopt the views of whichever party those beliefs align more closely with on other issues. That’s a big reason why free trade moved from a Republican position to more of a democratic one. Thirdly some people are just being dishonest. It’s pretty clear the right has never cared about free speech, that’s just a tool they use to defend bigot.
They’d have to be a Democrat, basically. That how far left their beliefs have to be. They could the most sensible and center republican and I wouldn’t vote for them. I.E., I like John McCain, I have a lot of respect for him, but even today I probably wouldn’t vote for him.
If they don’t wholeheartedly believe in abortion rights, empathetic reform to the immigrant system, universal healthcare and more funding to social programs, it’s a no go for me.
My response to your first paragraph:
The reason those people vote Republican is simple (and the same reason they voted Democrat until the long, slow switch from the 10’s/20’s, through FDR, Truman, and then JFK and LBJ and the change to their agenda where civil rights became a cornerstone and flipped the alignment completely).
A belief in their in-groups being at the top of each chain, due to racism, religious fascism, and misogyny.
Republicans support Whites at the top. Their voters are for that.
Republicans are for Christians at the top. Their voters are for that.
Republicans are for Men at the top. Their voters are for that.
Those groups are inherently “better”, and deserve special, protected privilege in society.
Democrats used to be for those things, but that realignment happened over a period of about 40-50 years.
MAGA (and conservative) voters all say they’re not happy with the direction of the country. What they all mean is they’re not happy slipping down the hierarchy they believe in, and which they impose on others. It’s zero-sum. Any gain for someone else is to their detriment. In their idea, any gain (be it civil rights, liberties, protections, etc, no matter how small,) is a step up the pyramid that someone else (i.e. themselves mainly) must take a step down from.
To a tee, a MAGA voter believes in two things for certain (and, to a relative extent, a “normal” conservative voter as well):
there is a sociopolitical hierarchy.
they deserve/need to be at the top.
Any other belief, even if contradictory or hypocritical, will be worked around if it supports both of these beliefs.
If it serves them to have pedophiles in charge, then pedophiles will be in charge.
And you can add a third thing that they believe in:
This is them imposing their hierarchy on everyone else.
Thus, a fourth rule:
Which sort of leads to the next bit:
“In a fair fight, I (the White Christian Straight Man), will always win. This is right, natural, and/or divinely ordained.”
“The opposition is inherently lesser and weaker than me, so they must either accept their place as lesser and below me, or they must fight unfairly to usurp me.”
“To fight me, and usurp me is unnatural and wrong. If they were to usurp me, they would do terrible things to society and ruin everything good and sacred. Therefore, I must use every available means to secure my position.”
“I am righteous, they are not.”
After Jan 6 I wouldn’t ever vote for a republican again.
Maybe. But I doubt that would ever happen
Several blue states have republican governors and several red states have Democrat governors.
Outside of places like reddit we aren’t as hyper-partisan as it seems.
I don’t vote according to my beliefs. I disagree with the core policies of the republican platform thus would never vote for them. My beliefs do not come into play. Maybe I’m defining “beliefs” differently than everyone else…
ETA: I vote pro-choice, not because I believe women have the right to choose, or because I believe life starts at whatever age, I do so because I want my children and grandchildren to be able to choose how and when to start a family. Beliefs have nothing to do with it. I vote for equality for same sex couples, not because I believe they should have the same rights, but because I want everyone to be able to choose who they marry. Why are we framing everything in the context of “beliefs”? Doing so only legitimizes those who hold abhorrent stances and claim they are also “beliefs” that deserve equal consideration. “Believing” that women have the right to choose only validates those who “believe” that women don’t have the right to choose.
I vote my values, not my party.
Google ai summary on “a wolf in sheep’s clothing” is apt here:
“A wolf in sheep’s clothing” refers to a person who appears harmless or even kind on the outside but is actually deceitful, malicious, or dangerous underneath. It’s a metaphor for hidden deception and refers to someone who disguises their true, often negative, nature.”
The phrase originates from Aesop’s Fables, where a wolf attempts to trick sheep by wearing a sheepskin.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus uses the image of wolves in sheep’s clothing to warn against false prophets who appear righteous but are actually harmful.
The phrase is a common idiom describing someone who is not what they seem, with hidden malicious intentions.
It can refer to someone who pretends to be friendly or helpful while secretly plotting harm, or someone who hides their true, negative nature.
Synonyms include bigot, charlatan, crook, impostor, phony, and trickster according to Thesaurus.com.
Examples:
A charming and charismatic serial killer like Ted Bundy.
A financier like Bernie Madoff, who ran a massive Ponzi scheme.
A cult leader like Charles Manson, who manipulated his followers into violence.
Salespeople who are overly friendly to get you to buy something.
People who pretend to be your friend while secretly working against you
Well duh, if they aligned with my political beliefs yea.
That’s how a party works.
Id vote for whichever party most closely aligns with my beliefs. Right now it is not the Republicans.
Trump promised all this populist stuff that sounded wonderful to anyone who didn’t really pay attention.
If a republican/maga is talking, they are manipulating and lying to you.
“Oh wow, lower grocery prices. No more taxes, Plenty of new jobs, no more war, Middle East peace, Free speech, an end to crime, no more division and racism, it’s too good to be true. Yall!”
Many Republicans used to. But maga and that portions of conservatives don’t.
Financially conservative while being socially liberal.
I vote for policies, not people, not parties.
If voting for a Republican gets me universal healthcare, I’ll vote Republican.
If voting for a ham sandwich gets me universal healthcare, I’ll vote for a ham sandwich.
The republican party is fundamentally broken to me as a brand. Anyone willing to wear its colors will never get a vote from me.
Whatever other positions they might have, their acceptance of the republican brand says more to me about they actually believe.
The difference is that Democrats vote in favor of what they like, while Republicans vote against what they don’t like.
There are good reasons why both Nixon and Trump are Republicans. I would need more than just a few Liberal policies to change my voting habits. I would need Republicans to make a clear turn from the policy direction they’ve been on for the past 50 years or so.
If my grandmother had wheels, she would have been a bike.
Are you basically asking if I would vote Republican if they were Democrats but called themselves Republicans?
Well, yes.
No, because Republicans are criminals and have been for a long, long time.
“Would you vote Republican if they aligned more with your beliefs?”
Yes.
If the parties did another swap I would go along with it. I am more concerned with policy than the name of the party.
In a heartbeat. I just don’t see that happening
At one point about 25 years ago I was planning to vote for a Republican for my University’s Board of Regents but he dropped out of the race for personal medical reasons.
It should be noted that he was a Republican in one of the most liberal places in America which means to get elected his views were probably closer to that of a moderate Democrat in most places.
The main reason was that he was an incumbent who acted as the swing vote in getting domestic partnership benefits implemented at my University so I thought he deserved another term.
Shortly after he also announced he was switching parties over the Iraq war.
I think in the last 25 years the Tea Party and MAGA movements have either purged or intimidated most sane Republicans.
At this point if the Republicans were aligned with my views they wouldn’t be Republicans.
This was actually an issue with African Americans for a long time. There was such a strong historical loyalty to the Republican Party because Lincoln ended slavery, that black voters (especially in the South) kept voting Republican even after the GOP policies were no longer in line with African American best interests. That persisted until the civil rights era.
Nope. They’d only enable the worst of their faction. There are no equivalents to Manchinema in the GOP
You ever see that video of the guy that held a picture of Trump, and a picture of Kamala with their policies switched walking through New York?
It was interesting how so many people picked Kamala, but then when it was revealed that the policies were switched they’d get mad and storm off, blue hair, body odor you can smell through a video and all.
So yes, they would. The problem is the propaganda on both sides of the algorithm. No one truly cares about policies just a face, a placard, a puppet, a color.
I might have, but I can never trust any Republican again. No one should. We see demonstrable proof that they lie and cheat to get into office. How can you possibly know if they truly believe what they say?
And yes, it is all Republicans. Or rather, it’s such a high percentage of Republicans, it will always be a gamble voting for one. It’s just not worth the risk.
