It’s pointless. You wrap up your gift. Give it to them to destroy the hard work and time you spent making a nice little bow ribbon and then they discard the paper. It’s also just wasteful. Maybe I could understand for really sentimental and important gifts. But does my aunt need to wrap socks and deodorant for christmas for every single one of my siblings? Probably not.
I’ve already gone through the effort of getting you a nice gift. You can take it and be grateful about it.

Redditor trying and failing to understand a social activity
It’s just a fun activity we do to surprise others, it doesn’t need to make 100% sense in every way.
Lots of things we do that makes no sense.
There is a Japanese way to wrap gifts in fabric which is definitely not as wasteful, I really like it
Edit: it’s called Furoshiki for anyone interested
I love gift bags for this reason! You can still dress up the present nicely and keep it a bit of a surprise. It takes much less time and effort than wrapping, and the bags can be regifted and reused over and over so it’s not wasteful!
Your poor aunt..
Sounds like your opinion should be you dont like to unwrap gifts. Don’t blame her.
Some crafty folks reuse it.
Unpopular, but I agree! Horrible waste.
Nah I like wrapping presents and half the excitement of getting a present is unwrapping whilst trying to guess what it is
i so disagree. wrapping is the most fun part !!! and opening a complete surprise is even more fun
I use gift bags and tissue paper. Although this year I was thinking gift boxes or tote bags so they’re more likely to be re-used.
Presents are provably dumb full stop. See the famous academic paper The deadweight loss of Christmas.
The only reason they make sense is as a social activity, a ritual sacrifice. And the wrapping paper is part of that. Get rid of the paper and you may as well ditch the whole thing.
I wonder what you think about growing food just to destroy it with your digestive system, turning it into shit.
…since you seem to gauge the value of an action by the result only. Surely you apply this logic across the board? Or just things you want to?
