You don’t need to wash jeans more than once a month

r/

Jeans are made of magical material that absorb everything.

If you just hang them up to dry between wears, they will dry out, never smell, and be good to go.

In fact, washing your clothes too often is just consumerism, and adding insane amounts of wear.

No reason for it, if you aren’t sweating HARD into them, hang em up, and wear em a few days later.

The world (particularly reseviours), your wallet, and your pants will thank you.

PS turn your clothes inside out when ya washem

Washing outer clothes, sure not very often – but washing underwear, no. Needs to be done after every wear.

With jeans, mine tend to get dusty and muddy and look a lot dirtier than they are, so I probably wash them more often the necessary, but I’d rather look clean as well as be clean.

  3. theblackfool Avatar

Jeans absorbing everything is exactly why you should wash them.

  4. AgeMundane6632 Avatar

I’ll wear em a couple times… but a month?! I def wear the same pair more than a couple times in a month. No way I’m going that long.

  5. DesertGeist- Avatar

I often read that jeans shouldn’t be washed too often, but honestly they get nasty after 2 or max 3 days.

  6. Old-Description-2907 Avatar

If you don’t go outside maybe

  7. Crazy-Al-2855 Avatar

    Gross!

What do you mean dry them out after wearing them… are your jeans wet after you wear them?

  8. I_am_Hambone Avatar

If you wear them once a week, ok I can see a month, maybe.
But more than a couple wears, for me its 3, they start to smell.

  9. BroCanWeGetLROTNOG Avatar

I’m surprised this is unpopular, I thought this was common knowledge lol

Everyone who works in clothing and laundry industries repeats this claim

  10. mandi723 Avatar

I wear jeans daily. Surely you aren’t suggesting 30 uses before they’re washed.

  11. JohnTeaGuy Avatar

    Highly depends on your lifestyle.

Sitting indoors working in an air-conditioned office or something is very different than if youre outside doing manual labor in the heat, for example.

Cant even remember the last time i washed my jeans. Given i dont wear jeans often.

The responses on this post are wild.

Jeans should barely ever be fully washed at all. Spot cleaning is fine unless they’re coated in mud, they’ve become very wet or extremely sweaty, etc.

Once a month??? No, once or twice a week is acceptable but that..

  15. zeizkal Avatar

Denim is anti microbial, some guy did a test between freshly one day worn jeans and a month worn jeans and they were the same.

People who say this probably don’t work so they’re closed don’t get dirty

  18. Hold-Professional Avatar

I agree you don’t need to wash them every time you wear them but only once a month is fucking nasty OP.

  19. FunOptimal7980 Avatar

You don’t have to wash them as often, but once a month is crazy.

  20. Subsandwich99 Avatar

I don’t know what you do for a living, but I work in maintenance, and my jeans get washed every week.

  21. pip-whip Avatar

There have been studies that have shown that cotton bluejeans do not become contaminated with bacteria growth even after a full year of wear without washing them. And that is because cotton (and some other natural fibers) deter bacterial growth. So your opinion is not misguided. The oils our skin produces that might make your jeans feel dirty when wearing them also inhibit bacterial growth.

However, absorbing everthing is not a reason not to wash them. That would be a reason to wash them.

If your jeans are not 100% cotton, such as if they have a synthetic fiber to add stretchiness, or if you spill food directly on them (or have weak hygiene in general), then you would need to wash them more regularly.

Brother I own three pairs of pants and live in Texas, I’m not a heavy sweater but by wear five they are DONE. Maybe for certain climates and certain types of denim.

  23. spacefaceclosetomine Avatar

Correct! Have a few pairs in rotation and they’ll need washing every 10th wear or so. Unless they get smokey smelling from a bar or fire pit or visibly dirty, of course, or very, very wet with sweat.

  24. smaryjayne Avatar

I spend my working hours in scrubs. They 100% will be washed after every use cause there’s a 99% chance I have pee somewhere on me by the time I get home. I also have OCD so my brain won’t let me re-wear any clothes that have touched outside air without being washed. Pajamas and anything that gets worn on a day I spend exclusively inside can be reworn up to 2 more times before going into the laundry.

  25. _banana___ Avatar

Jeans are absolutely fine to be worn even in excess of a month unless you get them especially dirty. They are naturally antimicrobial, so basically as long as they don’t stink, they’re good to go. This only applies to 100% denim, not polyester blends.

  26. ChesterMudd Avatar

I wash my overalls about once every 2 weeks. If I get pretty dirty/sweaty, I hang em up and hose em down and let them air dry. Denim wasn’t made to be washed daily.

  27. coal-slaw Avatar

I wash my jeans no more than once a week. In the summer, you sweat, and that accumulates. Nasty.

  28. ExcitementSpecial360 Avatar

I wash and dry mine because with repeated wear they tend to stretch a bit and lose shape. Even jeans that have built in flex do it.

  29. Ayeronxnv Avatar

Found the one who smells like dirty laundry who doesn’t know they smell like dirty laundry.

  30. Purplehopflower Avatar

I think this is true of 100% denim jeans. However, at least for women, those are a rare find. Most have some sort of stretch fiber (Lycra or elasticine) added. Those do smell funky if you sweat.

  31. Ornamental-Plague Avatar

A lot of people seem to be forgetting not all jeans now are even all denim most aren’t.

“While many jeans are made from 100% cotton denim, most jeans are actually a blend of materials, including cotton, polyester, and sometimes spandex or elastane for stretch and comfort. Traditional jeans were often 100% denim, but contemporary designs frequently incorporate blends to enhance flexibility and breathability.”

So unless you are buying 100% denim jeans you should certainly wash your jeans…..

Most people (exceptions to every rule for sure) who are going out of their way to buy 100% denim jeans are wanting them because they do rough jobs, dirty jobs, and want them to hold up. Those people also wash their jeans for reasons you’ve mentioned i/e sweating like hell, or mud or gunk from work.

This opinion is unpopular because it belies such a huge amount of ignorance, a fundamental misunderstanding of basic social intelligence and basic human hygiene that it would *have to* be uncommon among most demographics of living humans.

    So, good job, I guess.

  36. jillieboobean Avatar

My hubby wears jeans to work as an electrician and his jeans are sometimes caked in dirt, sometimes they don’t even come clean the first wash. So, yeah, his get washed every time they’re worn, sometimes twice.

I think you forget that some people get dirty, OP.

  37. ohlookitsGary Avatar

You need to dry out your jeans after you wear them?

Totally agree by the way. Jeans are magic.

  38. arctic-apis Avatar

I usually only wash my jeans when they get visibly dirty or I spill something on them.

  39. AardvarkIll6079 Avatar

  59. MaybeNotMath Avatar

If they need to be hung up and dried, you 100% sweated hard enough for them to be washed

  60. Appropriate-Data1144 Avatar

I dont know why jeans are such a controversial thing. Wash them, don’t wash them. Nobody cares. Do whatever you want. Just stop telling other people how to do their damn laundry

  61. random08888 Avatar

This might depend on the person. Don’t be wearing stinky jeans around because someone told you that you can wait one month to do your laundry- they did not, this message is not for you, if you sniff your jeans and they are funky wash them😂 aside from that… if you wear them daily I could see a full week! But I’m always wiping my hands on my pants so I wash them every time hahah

  62. HairyDadBear Avatar

Agree. But I live in a hot climate so I wash them regularly

  63. JuJuJooie Avatar

r/rawdenim: apparently wash your jeans once a month is overkill, you should only do so once or twice per year, tops

  70. AlkalineBrush20 Avatar

I’m fine using the same jeans for 2 weeks if it doesn’t get stained, but in summer it gets soaked with sweat in just the way to work and back, regardless of the AC at work or on the bus. Shirts, underwear and socks are definitely a no go for more than a single day. The armpits and crotch smell and the whole sock to from being in a shoe all day.

  71. trancat Avatar

Try wearing your jeans in a dirty work environment 5 days a week and come back to me. Take my upvote.
