You should be allowed to take the day off when you are having a bad day.

r/

Let’s be honest there are times when you are so burnt out that you just force thru the day. At times like this you’re least productive. Surely if there was a time out option for like 30 mins or the whole day off depending on how much it affects your productivity. It should be limited to once every two weeks to ensure it’s not being abused.

You can, that’s why your job gives you time off options.

  3. kittycatche Avatar

Do you guys give reasons for using your PTO? If I need a day off I just tell them that I’m taking the day and that’s the end of it.

  4. throwaway669_663 Avatar

Me making my coworker mad so that they can get the day off. Girl boss😊

  5. Caitxcat Avatar

what if someone is always having a bad day? there is always someone who will abuse the system.

  6. riggity_rekd Avatar

They are called mental health days or personal days and many companies are starting to offer them. But this already exists in some compacity

  7. Ninjalikestoast Avatar

Most decent jobs allow you Paid Time Off and you are not required to give a reason for that time off. So, you can 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Delete the post already.

  8. Substantial-Put-5727 Avatar

It might not be practical depending on the job/school, but I agree. And as a girl, I would use this every time I got my period.

  9. MovingBlind Avatar

I don’t know how unpopular this is outside of the workforce, maybe a CEO might disagree. But you have PTO for a reason. Even if I don’t have PTO I have definitely called in sick for a day bc I needed to take a break.

  10. Thatsaclevername Avatar

You totally can and I totally do. I told my boss last week “Hey the fishings real good down at the gates today, my boys are heading out. I’m leaving right now unless you have an objection” and it worked like a charm.

  11. oooriole09 Avatar

    I mean, it’s called PTO.

It’s still get abused at once every two weeks as well. Mike would magically find a way to have a bad day everytime a deadline pops up.

  12. NetJnkie Avatar

    What PTO is for.

  13. cherrycokezerohead Avatar

I think thatd be fine if it counts against your PTO or sick time depending on how you wanna use it. Since your coworkers will have to pick up extra slack it should come out of your time off.

  14. NoahtheRed Avatar

    Uh, you can?

“Hey boss, I’ll be off today. Feeling under the weather. I’ll see ya tomorrow”

    or

“Hey, I need a quick breather. I’ll be back in 20.”

  15. PandaMime_421 Avatar

You are allowed, at least at a lot of jobs. I can pretty much take off whenever I want/need unless there is an important project, etc. Of course it wouldn’t be tolerated if someone abused it or created problems that others had to fill in for all the time, etc.

  16. MrBingly Avatar

Here they’re called no-tell days. You can just take off and not give a reason.

  17. who_even_cares35 Avatar

I get unlimited sick days and a bad day or I just can’t do this today counts as mental health

  18. luigiamarcella Avatar

You can. It’s called either lying or deciding you don’t need to give your workplace personal details/having a cool boss.

I would say once every two weeks is kind of a  lot for an entire day needed though.

  19. ArseOfValhalla Avatar

I love being a 1099 employee and I can do just that. If I need a day – I take it. Or I leave early. or whatever.

I try to not take advantage but some weeks, its just rough getting through the day.

  20. BlonkBus Avatar

as a mental health supervisor and provider, I encourage my staff to take mental health days the same if they were barfing or have covid or whatever. I care about your health and also care about your clients getting good services. take care of yourselves, people.

  21. Colleen987 Avatar

Like a mental health day? These do exist in companies (more common in some countries than others though).

  22. Anxious-Raspberry-54 Avatar

I am a teacher. My district approved mental health days. Not that we didn’t do that anyway. But its cool to know they’re ok with that.

  23. wandawayer Avatar

But you literally can. You have days off, you spend it however you like

  24. Due_Essay447 Avatar

You can, that is what PTO hours are for

  25. schecter_ Avatar

You can, you just have to lie.

  26. shawcphet1 Avatar

There are a lot of jobs where this is quite normal. I get like 4 weeks of PTO, and 5 days of paid sick leave a year. I wouldn’t do this if the team just got swamped or there was an urgent issue or something, but if things are calm, I will often take a day or a half day randomly.

  27. CuckoosQuill Avatar

if you are not in the mood take the day off; I will not go if I am not into it

  28. Iamwomper Avatar

This is common everywhere i worked…
Worked in it last 30 years.
    Also in Canada.

  29. darcmosch Avatar

I just tell em I need a day.

  30. ahdrielle Avatar

I don’t know about a day every two weeks being fair without it counting towards your overall attendance. I think you should get one ‘free’ day a month or every other month where you can call out no questions asked and no points against any attendance policies they have.

  31. TraditionBubbly2721 Avatar

You are, mental health days are a thing. You don’t need to justify your rightfully entitled time off if it’s PTO. Yours to use for whatever reason you want

  32. MemeDaddyMarcus Avatar

Yeah you should, so I do. None of there business what I’m doing on my day off, sometimes I got shit to do, sometimes I just don’t wanna deal with shit

  33. Square-Raspberry560 Avatar

I have a PTO bank; as long as I have the time available, I can just tell them I’m going to be off and don’t give them a reason🤷‍♀️ They don’t ask, because it’s my PTO to use as I please.

  34. Lexifer452 Avatar

Yeah. PTO is PTO. I don’t ever give a reason. It’s none of their business.

  35. pbrown6 Avatar

No. People just need to be stronger

  36. gorcorps Avatar

You ARE allowed to take a day off

The question is if you’re then allowed to come back

  37. taita2004 Avatar

Who thinks this is an unpopular opinion??

  38. impasse602 Avatar

Everyone is saying you can but idk what field everyone is at but i know in the food industry you cant. Maybe your bad day started at work or started all day and then had to go to work but what some ppl dont understand especially in the food industry is that managers hate having to do their job and if you call in and say you need a mental health day they get passive aggressive towards you and start cutting your hours thinking you cant do your job effectively.

I agree with the OP here ive had 2 occasions at 2 separate kind where i had a terrible shitty day and it got noticed to where i had a write up because i wasnt “servicing up to standards”

  39. GoofyGuyAZ Avatar

Back in the old days dogs belonged outside as guard dogs. Now if you have it outside people get all angry

  40. needs_more_zoidberg Avatar

My employees get 8 paid days off per year off for whatever reason they want. People seem blown away by this, but IMO it pays for itself. Happy employees who feel taken care of do phenomenal work.
