Younger sibling stereotypes are annoying and untrue.

r/

I am sick of how younger siblings are always portrayed as “spoiled” and “selfish” in media and in real life. Growing up, I’ve always been compared to my older sister and never got attention, even when my sister broke my bones twice nobody cared or even punished her, so when I see another younger sibling being portrayed negatively for the millionth time it pisses me off. I know it varies based off of families but even when people do talk about their experiences people brush it off and try to overshadow it with theirs. It’s so hard to find relatable media because of the constant stereotypes, and I can’t believe this is even considered unpopular.

Damn, younger sibling media portrayal? Now take that feeling and apply it to being a minority in america (and not a specific one, no specific race, any minority here; yeah lol we got it worse than how little siblings are portrayed) sincerely a younger sibling who is also a minority

As an only child whose friends all have siblings, the younger sibling getting pampered and the older sibling having to take on extra responsibilities or cater to the younger sibling seems far more common in my experience.

I guess on depends on the family and the perspective. Older siblings will mostly say that the younger ones got spoiled while younger ones mostly deny that.
Take for instance clothes. In most families the clothes are handed down from the older to the younger so that the older always gets new while the younger has to wear the old ones. So the Youbger will complain.
On the other hand the older sibling has to take responsibility for the younger. That means taking them everywhere and getting all the blame if something gets wrong. Some younger ones take this opportunity and blame everything on their older sibling and even break things or hurt themself on purpose.

But I guess it depends on the personality. I (the older one) was the quiet one who didn’t complain much, while my sister did a lot. So she used that.

One situation I want to share, which shows which kid got more attention:
My sister and I did the dishes with my father helping us We were probably around 6 years old. My sister accidently dropped a plate that shattered. She immediatly started crying and my parents assured her it’s ok. No one gave me any attention even through I tried to ask for help multiple times. I was bleeding on the floor, because I got a piece of the plate bigger than my hand stuck in my leg. So in this case and many other cases the loud one got the attention, which happened to be the younger one in my family.

My younger sibling was definitely more spoiled.

I had to walk home from school, once I finished they got picked up from school. Just one example.

I got grilled for dropping out of uni because I lost interest. All they got was, “try something else”.

    Stereotypes are based on reality.

I’ve seen a younger sibling of friend crash and total a brand new 17 thousand dollar car within a month of it being gifted to them. Just for it to be a “not big deal” like what the fuck is that.
