Why do people put raisins in dessert? Never have I ever heard about a cookie with raisins and thought, wow that makes this sweet dessert so much better! Never. A friend made us banana muffins today which I was very excited about, only to open the tupperware and see… raisins protruding their shriveled little skins out of the muffin top. No! Does anyone actually like raisins? Convince me what desserts are improved by their addition.
Ps still very nice gesture from the friend, I will not be saying anything about my raising hatred of course.

But god damn, I love a nice, warm, hearty oatmeal raisin. I’d pick it over a chocolate chip any day.
I’ll take your raisins, and eat them
I hate raisins, but let ppl enjoy what they like
You can’t spell raisin without SIN
Raisins are delicious, this is literally just an issue of taste.
To answer your question, why people put raisins in food. Its because they like raisins in the food.
I agree with you because I despise raisins but enough people like them obviously lol we don’t all like the same things or have the same taste buds. I’m also not a picky eater and can tolerate raisins but would just rather do without them.
I went to a potluck yesterday and someone made a mayo-based broccoli salad with raisins. I’d sooner eat one of those raisin banana muffins!
Raisins are nasty
Raisins are nature’s candy
I like an oatmeal raisin cookie, but I really don’t like raisins other things. I will usually omit or replace with some other dried fruit in recipes.
Who is keeping raisins in demand?
The only way I can even tolerate them is mixed with trail mix. Outside of that I have zero desire to actively search out raisins for snacking
Oatmeal Raisin cookies are my favorite type of cookie, and the more people disagree with me just means that I get more cookies
Ok. So. I have a theory:
Originally, vanilla extract was made with whatever liquor you could get your hands on. One common such liquor was rum. Vanilla extract made with Rum is the PERFECT flavor to go with raisins.
I’ve dabbled with making my own extracts, and one day put rum extracted vanilla in oatmeal. Everyone, even my picky eaters, all came to the conclusion that raisins would go good in it.
It is my theory that these recipes that call for raisins were made with vanilla extract that used rum as the base of the extract.
What’s everyones problem with raisins? I prefer not having them in my desserts but theyre not bad?
My dad put raisins in brownies because he ran out of nuts. My son is still mad 15 years later. 🤣
Raisins are why people don’t trust cookies.
Why did someone at some point in the past good “Hmm, I like grapes but what if I made them worse in every way.”
I fucken love cookies with raisins. Those muffins sound rad as hell too.
Everyone saying they love raisins in cookies would probably enjoy my family’s date cookies, which include raisins. I have a bag of them in the freezer from Christmas
Raisins are fantastic in:
Oatmeal cookies
Carrot cake
Cinnamon Buns
Granola w yogurt
Chocolate
Some salads
My hand
Not sure why they have such a bad reputation, and there are definitely places they should not be, but they are delicious little treats, especially when in something sweet.
Raisins are awful. They’re even worse in savory dishes.
So much better when you microwave them with a little sherry first.
Oatmeal raising cookies, amazing. I also love raisins in something like tea brack, or in bagels. Raisin bread makes a fabulous french toast which is arguably the dessert of breakfast.
Raisins by themselves are fantastic. I especially like golden raisins. The problem is that people just put them in stuff that makes no sense. Like… chicken salad… potato salad …. WTF?
Raisins are great and I don’t understand the hate.
What are we talking here? Bread pudding? Oatmeal cookies? Raisins are a welcome and encouraged addition.
aw hell na Karen
It’s not really the taste for me, although that’s not good either but the texture. The texture doesn’t go with anything.
I eat them by the handful, as I really like them. Also, they are full of nutrients, including calcium, which I need for my osteo.
perfect usage of this subreddit ngl
I only like golden raisins cooked in oatmeal. Other than that, I don’t care for them.
Bugs on a log and Raisin Bran are the only time I’ll accept a raisin as an ingredient.
Because they’re sweet and delicious.
Raisins are only legal in carrot cakes and cookies with oatmeal.
My grandmother made raisin cookies–no oatmeal or cinnamon, more of a soft sugar cookie with raisins in it–that were really tasty. They were much better than they sounded.
Raisins also work in either rice pudding or bread pudding; both are good with a touch of cinnamon.
Oatmeal raisin cookies are wonderful, especially still warm…
Upvoted for unpopular opinion. If they weren’t popular, there wouldn’t be so many desserts that contain them.
On the other hand, they don’t work in savory dishes at all, at least in my experience. (Trail mix gets a pass; the combo of sweet and salty there is delicious.)
Clearly OP has never had butter tarts
Disliking raisins is a meme, oatmeal raisin cookies are peak, I love stuffing with raisins, getting that nice tangy sweetness inside the nice salty savoryness otherwise it’s just bread that also tastes like a soup, raisin bread is the best breakfast toast.
I would take dried cranberries over raisins any day.
Can’t stand raisins in anything, and was especially shocked some restaurants put them in grape leaves
The very worst is when you think you’re going in for a chocolate chip and it’s a raisin.
Rasins and walnuts make everything better
I like raisins, but they dont go in most things imo. Oatmeal raisin cookies are the only time i enjoy raisins really
The only time I willingly eat raisins is in cinnamon raisin bread.
Screw you. Oatmeal raisin cookies are the best
Raisins are fantastic when added the right thing. Cookies and rice pudding for example.
Raisins in muffins, cookies, yogurt, with chocolate chips and nuts for a cycling snack, cinnamon raisin bread, banana bread, or even just on their own. They’re great!
(Needless to say, you’ve earned an upvote.)
raisinets mic drop
Butter tarts with pecans and raisins are the best butter tarts.
As Garfield Said: “I hate Raisins”
Oatmeal cookies and rice pudding both benefit from raisins but that is pretty much it
Nonsense, they’re delicious. If you haven’t had a nice moist spotted dick in your mouth then you haven’t lived.
Raisins are great in desserts as long as they are cooked properly. Overcooked/burnt raisins have a strong charred taste and ruin what they’re with.

I think raisin is one of the most accessible form of sweet/sugar before industrialisation. I don’t think it’s a stretch that keeping the tradition alive
I love raisins. Oatmeal raisin cookies, raisinettes, bread pudding
> Why do people put raisins in dessert?
Practically? Because it adds sweetness AND moisture without making your treat overpoweringly sweet.
Objectively? Because they’re tasty and people who insist otherwise need to grow up.
It’s difficult but possible to take a good cookie and add raisins and still have a good cookie. It’s unlikely to ruin a cookie by not adding raisins. Raisins are the worst and are a waste of a perfectly good grape.
Raisins are nasty. The devils dingleberries.
I agree 100%. Raisins are fucking gross and don’t belong in desserts of any kind.
They’re great. Everyone in my family likes them.
I feel the same for nuts as well tbh
Oatmeal raisin cookies are my favorite…
My mother put raisins in the turkey stuffing every year. Couldn’t stand it. She knew that and did it every year. And people wonder why I hate Christmas.
That, my friend, is a very popular opinion, I believe. And Good Lord, people, please stop putting those things in my oatmeal cookies instead of chocolate chips.
Raisins are like little natural candies. They’re so sweet they’re perfect for desserts. I feel like people with OP’s opinion are too used to hyper-sweet foods
I like the texture
Dudes raisins are great in rice pudding.
Add some walnuts and that’s a delicious dessert.
Raisins in rice pudding is awesome.
Not pololar nor unpopular, just stupid opinion. All I gather from this is that you don’t like raisins
Oatmeal raisin cookies.
They are literally part of the name and ingredients list.
OP just doesn’t like raisins and feels like being on his or her soapbox.
Raisins make everything suck
Blueberries in everything is so much worse than raisins. They taste so dry
Ruin a dessert? Watch my mom put shredded carrots in Jello. No matter the Jello flavor.
I’m . . . not crazy about raisins. Won’t eat oatmeal raisin cookies. Any salads (including Waldorf) with raisins. Or anything else.
Except my grandparents’ raisin cake recipe passed down to my mom, me, my daughter, that we only make at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think the difference is simmering the raisins for 30-45 minutes so they’re plump and juicy. And mixing the raisin juice with baking powder so that it fizzes up before mixing with flour and spices and other ingredients. Otherwise, just no.
The wisdom of our ancestors when they were making high calorie high fiber foods for holidays they didn’t screw around with things that were hard to get but they didn’t want you to get bloated in a backed up colon hence things like raisins dates etc into these foods well now you can walk into a 7-Eleven and buy a banana that 4 days ago was in Brazil.
I love boerenjongens. Put it on vanilla icecream :p
I will literally spit out a cookie that looks like a chocolate chip cookie in front of the person who gave it to me. Fuck raisins. And fuck you for the deception
Raisins ruin everything!
Take my upvote. Oatmeal raisin cookie? Yum. Rum raisin ice-cream? Yes please. Ants on a log? Of course!
I love raisins added to salads and cookies.
Raisins are ok. For me, they just kind of exist. They do ruin trail mix for me, though.
I hate raisins, alone or in any kind of food. But whatever I wouldn’t eat my Portuguese Nana would say “Mais Fica” (More for me)💕
I like raisins in SOME things. I like an oatmeal raisin cookie…
..my dad used to make meatballs with raisins in them which I love and make to this day (Sicilian descent, that’s how his mom made them but his siblings hated raisins in meatballs).
Occasionally in a salad, like as a topper because I don’t have craisins but want that kind of sweetness and texture added to my salad.
…on a celery stick with peanut butter (ants on a log).
….hmmmmmmmm I think that is all 4 things I like raisins in. Only 1 of them is a dessert.
Why do you think this is unpopular? I’m a pastry chef and ice made many GOOD raisin desserts. They’re just dried grapes. Plenty of rubes hate raisins.
I’ll never understand the hate raisins get. They are so good!
Nahhhhh
I like raisin bread, trail mix with raisins, oatmeal raisin cookies, carrot cake with raisins
I wish raisins could go extinct, so there would be no chance of them being included in anything. Vile little pieces of shriveled shit.
Idk oatmeal raisins cookies are bomb. Raisins bran muffins are bomb. Maybe im old, or maybe you’re the weirdo.
Oatmeal raisin cookies are the best
I’m of the opinion that raisin haters only know them as disappointments while blindly expecting every cookie to be chocolate chip
The texture alone ruins anything. Fuck raisins.
I absolutely love raisins. Raisins in cookies, best cookie. A muffin without raisins is just a sad version of what it could be with the addition of raisins. We used to be able to get this American cereal that was just flakes and raisins, and I was very sad when they discontinued it. Chocolate covered raisins are amazing.
That said. I don’t like raisins in things like ice cream. When they get frozen they lose a lot of that texture that I like from them.
My from-scratch Cinnabon dupe cinnamon roll recipe is absolutely heavenly with raisins and pecans mixed in. Don’t like raisins? Fantastic. Didn’t want to share with you, anyway. More for me! Raisins in baked goods are 🤌
Damn… Should not have opened Reddit at 3 am, now I want raisins… They’re amazing btw and idk, maybe the raisin hate is an American thing cause I have never met a person who hates them and me, my best friend and my family would sometimes just be snacking on them by themselves.
Well I know one thing and it’s that this is not an unpopular opinion
I didn’t like raisins but appreciate them now in an oatmeal raisin cookie, bran muffin and soaked in rum for bread pudding.
I also didn’t like dates and absolutely love them now.
Same with walnuts. My aunt always put walnuts in her otherwise delicious chocolate chip cookies
I make these oatmeal raisin cookies that are absolute GODSEND. The batch size is like 3 dozen if I make it as is from the recipe, so when I do the whole amount, I usually bring some with me to work. People loved them, even one of my coworkers who said he doesn’t really like them tried them (cuz duh, free reason to have a mini break) and he ended up having two.
I do use a good amount of seasonings and they are pretty perfect ratio of oatmeal to flour so idk.
I can’t believe this isn’t popular. Raisins instantly ruin any baked good they get added in. Biting into one is instantly off putting. Removing them doesn’t work because they leave a radius of awfulness even in their absence. I would genuinely rather eat fried worms than raisins
People who don’t like raisins need to grow up.
The right raisins are absolutely perfect in a dessert. Sun-Maid ain’t it. You can find big juicy ones in a gourmet market. Or soak the supermarket kind for a few minutes to plump them up and soften them
Raisins are undercover chocolate chips from hell 🙂↔️ I said what I said
Oatmeal raisin cookie is the ultimate fake out. Can look like chocolate chip then tastes like pure disappointment.
Man I like oatmeal raisin cookies more than chocolate chip cookies.
I will not tolerate any slander toward oatmeal raisin cookies.
What about golden raisins in rice pudding?
Rum raisin ice cream! The raisins are sweet and add a different level of texture. I love it and I rarely eat raisins. Also, oatmeal raisin cookies.
Butter tarts with raisins and walnuts. It’s a Christmas thing in Canada.
