You’re drinking your coffee too hot

r/

Coffee tastes better when it’s lukewarm. I’m talking about ~110F. It’s true for all types of coffee; espresso, pour over, or drip. I’m aware of people ordering coffee extra hot for some reason, but what are their tongues and palates made of, titanium? If you put liquids into your mouth at 200F or more, you’re going to scald yourself. You have to let the coffee cool down a bit to avoid injury, plus at such a high temperature a lot of the flavor is muted. When the coffee cools significantly, so much more nuanced flavor comes out. At the other end of the spectrum, iced coffee hides much of the flavor because it’s too cold. Additionally, many iced coffee drinks are full of milk and other adulterations that overwhelm the coffee. I did once have a delicious shakerato on a very hot day in Italy, but that was just good espresso and sugar shaken with ice. My advice is if you really want to experience the full flavor of your coffee, brew it at the recommended temperature for proper extraction, but let it rest a bit before you enjoy it.

PS if you’re reading this outside the US, I apologize for using Freedom Units. I learned SI units in school, and I know they make more sense, but I still have trouble using them in my day to day.

EDIT: Sorry that the title pissed some people off, but it is just my opinion. I probably could have said “Lukewarm coffee tastes better”, but it’s too late now. Thanks to those who pointed out that you order extra hot because you’re waiting to drink it later when it will be cooler which kind of matches my point. People got some strong opinions about coffee.

Lukewarm is more nasty than hot coffee that goes cold IMO. Room temperature coffee is so disgusting to me

It HAS TO be either just hot enough to take little sips from (like literally on the absolute edge of how much heat is considered “a little too much”), or iced coffee with literal ice cubes in it. Room temperature lukewarm coffee is so foul

  3. HR_King Avatar

So the only choices are 110 or 200?
    Fail. Not unpopular, just silly.

  4. Ok-Calligrapher-8778 Avatar

Ideal temperature for brewing is 175 degrees, thats 80 C. Warmer than that neutralizes flavor, colder than that won’t extract properly.
Room temperature coffee is nasty, it needs to be warm. Not hot, warm.

I love coffee as hot as can be. once cooled, it’s ruined. I’ve never tried iced coffee and doubt I ever will. I cannot stand anything “coffee” flavoured

  7. Dazz316 Avatar

People who drink it like they like it are doing it right. Whether it’s lukewarm, cold or piping hot. If they’re drinking it a way they don’t like it because you or someone else said that way is best then they’re doing it wrong.

This isn’t unpopular it’s just, a declarative opinion. Would love a sub that was “Moldy” opinions, or just “bad opinions”.

how hot is my ice coffee meant to be

  10. Pope_In_TheWoods Avatar

But it brews best at 200F

  11. Substandard_eng2468 Avatar

I drink it at the perfect temperature since it is how I like it.

  12. lovepotao Avatar

?? Enjoy your coffee the way you like it. If mine isn’t steaming it’s not hot enough. Maybe my palette is made of titanium, but nothing annoys me more in the morning than coffee that is about to turn lukewarm.

  13. kechones Avatar

I like mine around 135 Fahrenheit, but to each their own

  14. kompeter Avatar

My first thought was 110 degrees (non-freedom unit) is extremely hot then realized it’s the freedom unit. For french press and V60, I read that 92 degree Celsius is best for brewing. Forgot where I read so my memory is my source.

You leave my fire water alone. My coffee better feel like drinking hell water.

  16. F1DL5TYX Avatar

My friend NO. Tepid coffee is revolting. I like hot coffee, I will have a few sips of iced coffee but only when it has so much stuff in it, it’s basically a milkshake

  17. littlemissmoxie Avatar

Hot served coffee IMO needs to be hot enough to have a bit of steam coming out and slightly warm on the outer mug wall. Not a lot or hot enough to need a jacket on the cup but just enough to be steamy.

If you’re on the go and won’t be able to drink the coffee right away for some reason then you probably want to order it hotter just to make the heat last longer.

But if I’m drinking it at home or at a cafe right away I want the heat to be just enough.

  19. ShamisenCatfish Avatar

    I drink cold brew

  20. Grouchy-Display-457 Avatar

People who order extra hot coffee do so because they use milk and sugar that cools it. Or they are not going to drink it right away.

  21. zireael9797 Avatar

    110F is 43.3C

    200F is 93.3C

    In case anyone is wondering.

And no… that’s the worse of both worlds

  22. Morall_tach Avatar

No one is putting coffee in their mouth at 200 degrees you idiot. People order coffee extra hot so they can drive to work and it’ll still be hot when they get there. You can take little sips at about 150 without burning yourself, bigger mouthfuls at about 135.

  23. Saya_99 Avatar

I much rather prefer lukewarm or cold coffee than hot coffee. I feel like the taste is duller when the coffee is hot, I can’t taste it as well. The flavors are much better when the coffee cools down.

  24. maybebaebea Avatar

Don’t tell me how I should drink my coffee. Not your coffee, not your business.

  25. Ok_Amoeba_3143 Avatar

When i’m in a rush to work i wished my coffee was less hot so i can just chug it down. then when it comes to my break time i get back to it and its cold and disgusting.

  26. occupy_this7 Avatar

My creamer cools it down. Im drinking it just right. Luke warm is gross

  27. devil_walk Avatar

    I’ll fucking decide

  28. Mister-ellaneous Avatar

If a person likes it, it’s not too hot

  29. Kimolainen83 Avatar

This varies I never drink coffee so warm that it burns so no I do not drink my coffee too hot. It’s more than lukewarm, but because lukewarm ruins the taste.

  30. Aggravating_Kale8248 Avatar

I hate coffee, but even I totally disagree with this. People have preferences with their drinks. Telling them they are wrong for what they personally like isn’t an opinion.

  31. ThisSideGoesUp Avatar

I think coffee taste like ass no matter what I do to it. So I just drink it black as fast as I can and move on with my life.

  32. lifeinrednblack Avatar

You’re probably also drinking your beer too cold.

  33. frawgster Avatar

I prefer lukewarm coffee. The reason I don’t drink it is because it goes cold too fast. Hot coffee takes longer to cool, meaning I have more time to enjoy it before it goes cold.

  34. reedzkee Avatar

it’s just like beer except hot not cold. you will taste more when its not as hot.

this can be a good or bad thing. the shitty coffee most people drink is not better lukewarm. but with a great cup, the flavors will be more present and nuanced if its not too hot.

  35. MusicalAutist Avatar

Somewhere around 140-150 degrees increases your chance of developing throat cancer significantly. Something else to think about…

  36. butfirstcoffee427 Avatar

Hot, freshly brewed coffee is elite. Like a hug for your soul.

  37. Vin-Metal Avatar

I’ve read that our taste buds work best closer to body temperature, so this makes sense to me. However, you are ignoring the pleasure of a hot drink. It’s not all about taste. On the flipside, melted ice cream may taste better, but I’d rather have it cold even if I taste it less

  38. D27AGirl Avatar

Lol then drink your coffee lukewarm 😂😂

  39. HistoricalTowel1127 Avatar

Shouldn’t this be titled “you’re drinking your cofffee too hot for me”. Don’t tell me how I like my coffee. I can drink 200F coffee without harming myself. There is a trick. I would tell you but you seem to know everything already. Unsolicited advice is a tricky thing as well. A wise person doesn’t need it and a fool won’t take it.

  40. Platos_Kallipolis Avatar

You are right that people drink their coffee too hot. But wrong about the better temperature.

Coffee should be brewed between 87-93 C and consumed between 58-66 C (obviously not talking about cold brew here).

Those temperatures maximize the flavor extraction and experience. Of course, the thing is: in the US, at least, many people who drink coffee actually do not like the taste of coffee. And a lot of coffee is brewed so poorly that it simply doesn’t taste good. In that situation, drinking it quite hot is a reasonable response.

But man, once you start having well brewed high quality coffee that has cooled a bit after brewing, I don’t know how you can go back to over-roasted, over-heated, brown caffeine juice.

  41. NebulaWish Avatar

    I like it iced anyway

  42. Percolator2020 Avatar

Agreed, otherwise the whiskey evaporates too quickly.

  43. Nice_Emphasis_39 Avatar

Coffee is best at 80 degrees or lower

  44. PjJones91 Avatar

Ew. I drink my coffee at 145-150. Lukewarm coffee doesn’t taste bad, but it’s way better hot. Not scalding, but hot.

  45. Mathalamus2 Avatar

i would prefer mine to be as hot as possible. you are supposed to boil water for tea and coffee, after all.

  46. MirrorOfSerpents Avatar

I now learnt I have lukewarmphobia. Fear of lukewarm coffee.

  47. flower_mom_98 Avatar

Wrong, if my coffee starts to get lukewarm, I can’t drink it, or it makes me nauseous. I have to add more hot coffee to heat it up if it does.
