You’re stranded alone on an island with a pig. There’s only local fruits/veg. Does the pig become your bestie, or do you kill it for its meat?

I mean if there’s an island, presumably I can fish and get a protein source that way. The pig is finite, and we will be homies.

  3. Spiritual_Speech_725 Avatar

The pig would be my buddy. I wouldn’t kill him even if I was starving.

  4. thefluffyparrot Avatar

Ultimately the pig is gonna become food. But how long I wait depends on how big the island is. If it’s too small that pig will eat all of the other food. So killing it will be more about preserving what I have at that point.

  5. Raterus_ Avatar

A feral pig my bestie?, have you ever seen a feral pig in action? This ain’t Moana little cute pig here, this is a creature that in no way, shape or form is going to let me get close. I’d be lucky to even catch a glimpse of that porker, but you can be sure I’m out for BBQ if I can!

  6. bassman314 Avatar

Pigs are strong and will eat just about anything.

Pig becomes my best friend, muscle, and helps to clean our space.

  7. Majestic-Lake-5602 Avatar

How abundant are the natural resources?

Pigs can compete directly with humans for most food sources (unlike sheep and cattle, which survive off foods that we can’t use).

If there’s enough fruit and veg to go around, me and the pig can be homies (they’re roughly as intelligent as an average toddler), but if we’re fighting over sweet potatoes, it’s me or Babe.

  8. Mae-7 Avatar

An island is surrounded by ocean. I’d just take my chances fishing.

  9. Thugnificent83 Avatar

I love bacon and hate fish, so that’ll do pig!

  10. Excellent_Editor_501 Avatar

There’s fruit and veg aplenty? Then me and Mr. Oinkers are gonna be good friends. It’s an island so there’s fish and most likely birds. I really don’t want to kill an animal but I think it would be easier to kill a seagull over a pig if i really wanted meat. I dont like pork anyways so…

  11. Colorado_Jay Avatar

I’m allergic to everything that lives in water, which is a major bummer when stranded on an island. I’d hold out as long as I could on what I could forage, but if I’m not rescued before I break mentally or become too malnourished…I’m cooking that pig 💯

  12. DrunkenHorse12 Avatar

How many meals you going to get out of 1 pig? Long as there’s enough fruit and veg for both of us looking after the pig will give you something to focus on.

  13. Jche98 Avatar

    There is another option 💀

  14. No-Strawberry-5804 Avatar

How many fruits and veggies? Are the pig and I going to have to compete for resources?

  15. Dolgar01 Avatar

Most people seemed to have missed a fact about pigs. Pigs will eat anything, including humans.

So an important question is, how domesticated/feral is the pig? Because, it might become a threat and not just because it’s eating the food resources.

Secondly, how big is the pig? It’s not going to be easy to physically kill an adult pig (depending on breed).

Best bet it to befriend the pig, train and work together. It can help root out food and we can share.

  16. lovepeacefakepiano Avatar

    Pigs eat a LOT.

I’m vegetarian, but not on a lonely island with limited food sources which I may have to defend.

Actually how old is that piggie? Not sure I could murder a piglet. They’re so cute.

  17. Brave_Quality_4135 Avatar

Are we talking about somebody’s lost, domesticated, potbelly pig or a legitimate, surviving on its own, wild boar? Cause one is intelligent and friendly and the other is rapidly going to charge you and will probably win.

I wouldn’t try to kill the pig unless it was necessary for my own survival.

I would probably let the pig live. I have no training as an abattoir worker or a butcher and would probably screw something up and either poison myself with improperly prepared pork, or actually get killed by an irate pig…

Idk if there are any predators on the island, but if a wolf or some shit shows up, I’ll be glad I left Piggo alive (I’m faster than him).

  21. GeekyPassion Avatar

Depends on if I can feed it or not. If he’s gonna eat my limited resources he’ll have to go. If not we’re gonna be friends

Use the pig to ferret out the viable food sources. Then eventually, have some bacon with a side of ham. I don’t want competiton over what I can eat.

I’ll start fattening the pig up and will be making salt, so I can cure and smoke Peppa when I kill and slaughter her.

  29. Cowslayer369 Avatar

It’s not even a resource question, a hungry pig will fucking eat you alive, bones and everything. Hell, in that situation it would basically be an arms race of me making a spear before it gets hungry. Especially since pigs grow tusks and hair in the wild and essentially become boars.

  30. Horizontal_Bob Avatar

There’s no way there is just one pig on the island

    Where there is one..:there are

  31. postmoderngeisha Avatar

Look, if it’s little, and you’re determined to, that would actually be the best time. What you gonna do with 500 pounds of pig meat on a deserted island with no refrigerator?

  32. JiovanniTheGREAT Avatar

Even if the pig is domesticated, they eat anything and everything and are a direct competitor for you. It’s gonna eat all of the fruit and veggies that you want and also want some of the fish you catch and also want you if it gets hungry enough. You shouldn’t even kill it for the meat, if you can’t satisfy its hunger, you will satisfy its hunger eventually. You’d have to kill it for survival on a multifaceted basis.

  33. pahamack Avatar

i wonder what’s the best thing to do with that meat?

assuming it’s a tropical island.. and that it’s a good sized pig and it would really help you survive, how do you keep it from rotting as long as possible? And what’s the best way to use the leftover parts? I imagine them attracting predators and scavengers might be a problem. Might be useful somehow as bait though.

I’m going to guess the best thing to do is make some long skewers out of branches and smoke the meat.

  39. Xarysa Avatar

    Sorry, piggy. It’s food.

Only local fruits and vegetables, while unspecified does generally hint at a lack of fat and protein. Smoke as much of it as you can, eat it aggressively.

A Coast Guard ship sees a signal fire on a small island and goes to investigate. They find a man and a pig who have been shipwrecked here for years. The man has burns and scars on his body, and the pig has four wooden legs.

The captain says, “good lord, what happened to you?”

The man says, “oh it was awful. The ship sank so fast, no one could get into the life rafts. Everyone drowned and I would have, too, but the pig towed me to this island.”

The captain says, “goodness! Is that how he lost his legs?”

The man says, “oh no, he was fine. Then I tried to start a fire, but it got too big, and the next thing I know I’m trapped under a burning palm tree! But the pig pulled me out.”

The captain says, “wow! And that’s how he lost his legs?”

The man says, “not at all. Later I tried to build a raft and sail away, but a shark knocked me overboard, but the pig, he fought off the shark and saved me again.”

The captain says, “and that’s how he lost his legs?”

    The man says, “nope.”

The captain says, “so how did…?”

The man says, “sir, when you have a pig this special, you don’t eat him all at once.”

  58. Cheeseanonioncrisps Avatar

Assuming it’s a friendly pig, we’re going to be besties. Not only do I not think I’d necessarily be able to slaughter an animal (mentally, or physically, since presumably I don’t have a gun) but also having another living thing around to hang out with will hopefully keep me from going mad with loneliness.

  59. erinoco Avatar

If I thought the pig could kill me, if there were no other food choices, or if it would hoover up the remaining food on the island, I would have no choice but to kill it, roast what I can eat in one sitting, and bury the rest.

If I killed it without those factors in play, I would want to have one – or preferably several – large airtight containers, as well as a large kettle, as well as butcher’s knives and a saw. I would need a lot of salt – at least 2-3 kgs – as well as a strong brine. I would need to get all these together, butcher the pig, cut it up very quickly before it starts to spoil (and best results would be 2-3 kg pieces) line each container with salt, put in a layer of meat, add a layer of a salt, and so on until the container is almost fill. I would then pour in the brine until the meat is entirely immersed, seal the container, and store it in a cool place until I need it.

I would only bother if I had the tools to do this effectively. I would have salt pork for months: I could make a stew with the fruit and veg every few days, although I would constantly worry whether I would have inadvertently given myself food poisoning through inexperienced butchery or preserving technique.

    Otherwise, live and let live!

  60. SeriousPlankton2000 Avatar

It’s one pig. If it’s pregnant, it will survive for some time. Otherwise: No breeding, no pig.

  62. Calm-Glove3141 Avatar

This French guy did this on camera , he caught a baby pig but was so desperately lonely that he couldn’t bring himself to eat it, in fact he had to recatch it a lot .

  63. MikeGander Avatar

So, background … I’m not a vegetarian, and I’ve hunted and fished off-and-on through my life so I’ve got no qualms about taking the carnivore role. But I also like animals enough that I’m not going to kill anything just for the hell of it.

    Depends on:

    • What kind of pig? Docile farm pig, pet-sized potbelly pig, or like a wild pig? Wild pigs are nasty and aggressive, if I’ve got something to kill it with that needs to happen ASAP.
    • Are resources abundant enough or am I not going to have enough to eat if the pig’s also around? If so, I guess I need to take it out just due to self-preservation. Sucks, because I would’ve rather had it as a pet (or if it’s not overly tame, at least something to watch move around).

If there’s plenty of healthy food growing, I’m not going to kill the pig. Unless I’ve got a bunch of butcher tools and the means to smoke (or otherwise preserve) meat, I’m not going to get much meat out of it to make it worth it. I’d be better off figuring out a way to catch fish, something smaller and more renewable.

  64. GrandAdmiralSnackbar Avatar

  66. I-Am-Really-Bananas Avatar

  67. Quietlovingman Avatar

Depends on how plentiful the food is. If food isn’t an issue, I would rather have a pet/companion than a meal. If the pig is going to eat us out of house and home, I may need to dig a BBQ pit. Having said that, I have never killed a pig and only know the most vague things about proper butchering of animals. Without the proper tools, I am not sure I even know how to make the proper tools. I am not a flint Knapper.

  68. EquivalentOwn2185 Avatar

ig we’re vegetarians together lil piggy 🤷‍♀️ hope u like fish !

  69. EwanMurphy93 Avatar

I don’t like pigs. Boggles my mind that people keep them as pets. It’d be a reserve food for if things ever get scarce. I wouldn’t name it or spend much time around it, and it would have its own sheltered pen. It’s livestock, nothing else.

  70. Biscuits4u2 Avatar

Do I have the means to preserve the meat? If not it would be hardly worth the couple of meals I would get from killing the pig. So long as there was enough food available for both me and the pig to live comfortably I see no reason to kill it. I might even be able to train it to go find mushrooms and stuff for me to eat.

  71. ChumpChainge Avatar

First off pork is disgusting to me and I love animals. So if there is fruit and veg, plus it’s an island so I can fish, he’s not on the menu. Secondly wild pig always 100% of the time is riddled with parasites and often with disease as well. He’s safe.

  72. UpvoteButNoComment Avatar

People are refreshingly confident in their ability to start a fire on this island!
Raw pig=bad news.  Not to mention, catching, killing, and slaughtering it seems challenging.

But, NO, I wouldn’t eat pig in my real life… I definitely wouldn’t on this island.

  73. EngryEngineer Avatar

I kill the pig, feral pigs are a big problem for resources, ecology, and personal safety. Then sun dry the meat, and those supplies can last a while if used to supplement fruits/veg and make it between ripe seasons rather than primary food source

No need to kill it. You can milk just about anything with nipples.

  79. Effective-Gift6223 Avatar

That depends. I’ve raised and butchered pigs. Mine were not pets, but were free roaming over a 3 acre partially wooded lot. When they got pretty big, they became more dangerous. One of my dogs, a big sheepdog, somehow got into their lot once, and they surrounded him and were about to attack, when I saw and got down there to rescue him.

If it’s a wild pig, I’ll kill it, if I can. It would be a constant threat, otherwise. If it’s a domestic, but large and not raised as a pet, same thing.

I’d have to have whatever was needed to kill and butcher it, though. That’s not happening without at least either a boar spear with a strong crosspiece, or preferably a gun, and at the very least a really good sharp knife.

On an island, I’d be surrounded bt salt water, which would be good to clean, soak, and provide salt to preserve the meat. But what would I use for containers, etc.? There’s an awful lot that goes into butchering and preserving meat from a large animal.

If it’s a baby pig, (or one of those little pot belly pigs) that can be raised as a pet, and there’s plenty of food for both of us, it lives.

  80. deaconthedegenerate Avatar

A pig might literally be the worst thing to be trapped with. Kill it before it tears apart all of the local food sources or else you’ll both die.

  81. Eve_In_Chains Avatar

Is the pig male or female? Is the pig full grown?
Male pigs older than 6 weeks do not taste like the pork we are used to. And if the pig gets hungry you are edible.

I would kill the pig. I would eat what I could and use the rest as bait to ensnare sea birds

I’m a huge baby. I’d kill myself before I killed the pig. Also, I’m picky as hell. My whole life I’ve thought, “would I even be able to eat if I was on a deserted island? I gag when I try things I don’t like, would I eventually be able to get it down if death was the alternative?” The gagging is so bad I’m honestly not sure I could. I do like pork but not enough to kill and butcher something. I’d rather just try to choke down whatever food I had access to, then off myself if I couldn’t. It would also give the pig some extra time.

Also if possible I would be best friends with the pig. If it’s amenable, we are cuddling.

are fishable fishies around? then the pig and I are pals. if not, I evaporate a lot of salt first to preserve the pig for as long as possible. as others said, it depends on the abundance of food around and other fauna.

also… do I even get a knife? must be long and sturdy to get to the pig’s heart, else it’s me the one getting butchered and not it, because their skin is thick as hell, and their skull resists a lot. besides, they are strong as hell and when in danger they can give a predator a run for its money…
