Blended families are notoriously difficult to navigate. You are combining different personalities and trying to create a cohesive household out of thin air. But there is a universal rule of parenting that absolutely cannot be broken under any circumstances. You never invade a teenager’s privacy. One stepmother on Reddit completely ignored that rule and committed an unforgivable act of sabotage against her stepdaughter.
To make matters infinitely worse, the father of the teenager literally stood by and watched the entire disaster unfold without lifting a single finger. He then took to the internet to ask if he was wrong for staying neutral while his wife destroyed his child’s hard work. The sheer lack of a spine on this man has the entire internet completely up in arms.
The Original Poster is a man who has been married to his thirty six year old wife Hannah for two years. He has a sixteen year old daughter named Morgan from a previous marriage. Hannah and Morgan do not have a good relationship. The dad openly admits that the two of them fight constantly and simply do not get along. Morgan usually lives with her biological mother but recently moved into her dad’s house for school reasons.
Putting a moody teenager and a combative stepmother under the same roof is already a recipe for disaster. But Hannah took things to a deeply toxic level. A while ago, she confessed to her husband that she had been secretly sneaking onto Morgan’s laptop. She snooped through the teenager’s files and found a novel Morgan was writing. Instead of scolding his wife for invading his daughter’s privacy, the dad thought it was a positive thing because Hannah praised the writing style.
That willful ignorance finally exploded in his face. The dad came home from work and walked into an absolute war zone in his living room. Morgan and her biological mother were screaming at Hannah. When the dad asked what on earth was happening, Morgan tearfully revealed that Hannah had completely deleted her entire novel.
Hannah defended her horrific actions by playing the ultimate victim. She claimed that Morgan had created a villain in the story using her exact name and physical description. Hannah was highly offended that this fictional character was evil and that Morgan had written bad words about her. Morgan rightfully argued that it was just a fictional story and Hannah had absolutely no business snooping through her private laptop in the first place.
Deleting months of a teenager’s creative work is a massive violation of trust and borderline emotional abuse. This was the exact moment the dad needed to step up, protect his child, and kick his snooping wife out of the room. Instead he did absolutely nothing. He literally just stood there watching the three women scream at each other. He did not say a single word in defense of his devastated sixteen year old daughter.
Unable to handle the conflict he allowed to happen, the dad cowardly stepped outside for a minute to get some fresh air. When he came back inside, everyone turned their anger directly onto him. Hannah unloaded on him for acting cowardly and not defending her. Morgan and her mom completely ripped into him for standing by while his new wife deleted months worth of his child’s hard work.
The situation quickly dissolved. Morgan packed her things, left the house with her mom, and refused to speak to him. Hannah packed her own bags, checked into a local hotel, and also gave him the silent treatment. The dad was left standing alone in his house receiving angry text messages from both sides. Everyone expected him to take a firm stance and actually do something to fix the massive mess.
Instead of taking accountability, the dad threw a massive pity party for himself. He complained that he had been on his feet working all week and his mental health was down the drain. He whined about being tired of them fighting all the time and blamed them for expecting him to get involved. He somehow made the destruction of his daughter’s novel entirely about his own workplace fatigue.
The internet did not hold back and universally crowned this man a massive ahole. You cannot stay neutral when an adult maliciously destroys a child’s property. Hannah proved exactly why Morgan made her the villain of the story. She acted like a wicked stepmother and committed the ultimate betrayal. But the dad is even worse for refusing to protect his own kid.
If this guy does not immediately hire a tech specialist to recover that deleted file and demand a massive apology from his wife, he is going to lose his daughter forever.
