This Mom Let Her Five Year Old Eat Her Sister’s Only Allergy Safe Dessert and Then Called Her a Selfish Jerk

Family gatherings are already stressful enough without having to guard your plate like a hawk. But if you have severe food allergies or medical dietary restrictions, holiday meals turn into a literal survival mission. You spend the entire day hoping you can just eat your carefully planned meal in peace without someone making a weird, entitled demand about your food.

One woman recently took to Reddit to share an absolute nightmare of a family party. The Original Poster deals with a massive combination of dietary hurdles. She is completely lactose intolerant, strictly gluten intolerant, and has to maintain a highly specific diet because she has diabetes. Finding a safe dessert is basically a miracle for her.

The drama unfolded over a weekend celebration for her grandfather’s seventy fifth birthday. The party was a small, intimate gathering of about twelve family members. Everyone chipped in to help. The grandmother cooked a massive lunch, and the Original Poster actually baked the main party cake and prepared several snacks for the group.

Because she obviously could not eat the regular party food, the Original Poster brought a small plate of safe snacks just for herself. More importantly, her sweet mother went completely out of her way to drive to another town and purchase a fifteen dollar, single serve slice of gluten free, lactose free, and sugar free cake so her daughter could safely participate in dessert.

Enter the Original Poster’s thirty six year old brother Martin, his thirty two year old wife Lea, and their five year old daughter Ivy. While the adults were talking and laughing, little Ivy was running laps around the table and free range grazing on absolutely anything she wanted. When she started grabbing the Original Poster’s specific allergy safe snacks, the aunt simply moved her plate out of reach.

Then came dessert time. There was a massive, two tier red velvet cake for the grandfather. But Ivy zeroed in on her aunt’s tiny, expensive, medical grade slice of cake simply because it had a little rose painted on top of it. She grabbed a fork and just started digging right into the only thing her aunt could eat.

The Original Poster gently stopped the kid, explained she could not have that specific slice, and offered to cut her a giant piece of the beautiful red velvet cake instead. Ivy threw a classic toddler tantrum and ran crying to her mother. Lea then approached the Original Poster and actually asked her to surrender the specialty cake to appease the crying child. The Original Poster firmly explained her medical reasons and said no.

Thinking the boundary was set, the Original Poster briefly went to the restroom. When she returned, she witnessed the ultimate betrayal. She found her five year old niece sitting happily on her brother’s lap, while the grown man actively spoon fed the child his sister’s only piece of safe cake.

The aunt was rightfully fuming. She confronted her brother, pointing out that his kid was literally eating her only dessert. Instead of apologizing for stealing, Lea followed the Original Poster into the kitchen and accused her of f*cking up the entire party. She actually called her sister in law a selfish jerk for trying to protect her own food.

To make matters infinitely worse, the brother actually chimed in and called his own sister an a**hole just because Ivy is a small child. He completely weaponized his daughter’s age to justify his own terrible, entitled parenting. The only saving grace in this entire story is that the mother stepped up and firmly defended the Original Poster.

The internet was absolutely disgusted by the audacity of this brother and sister in law. Medical diets are not a choice, and they are certainly not a joke. When someone has diabetes and severe intolerances, stealing their heavily planned, expensive meal is incredibly cruel.

You do not get to steal a fifteen dollar medical dessert just because your kid likes the painted flower on top. The parents had an entire two tier red velvet cake available to feed their crying child. The Original Poster is completely not the problem here, and she should probably start bringing a locked safe to all future family dinners.
