Blending families is always a messy recipe. You take a bunch of people who are used to their own routines and force them to share bathrooms and grocery bills. It takes patience and a lot of grace. But sometimes it just takes one wildly audacious adult to ruin the entire dynamic. One seventeen year old girl on Reddit recently found out exactly where she stands with her dad’s new girlfriend and the internet is completely horrified by the audacity of this caffeinated evil stepmother.
The Original Poster is a teenager who has been living full time with her forty five year old dad for a couple of months. Her mother is currently visiting a sick grandfather in Sweden. This means the OP is suddenly sharing a roof around the clock with her dad’s thirty three year old girlfriend and the girlfriend’s thirteen year old daughter. Previously the OP only visited on weekends so this full time living arrangement is a massive adjustment.
The transition has been pretty rough. The OP notes that the thirteen year old is incredibly whiny and pretty spoiled. The girlfriend absolutely dotes on her kid. To avoid the drama the OP usually just stays in her room and minds her own business. That is a completely normal survival tactic for a teenager in a brand new blended household. But her dad desperately wanted everyone to bond.
The drama kicked off when the girlfriend decided to take her daughter on a special outing. The thirteen year old apparently passed a math test and that warranted a massive celebration. The dad suggested the OP tag along for a fun girls day out. The OP really wanted to decline but she knew her dad wanted them to get along. To fund this bonding experience the dad generously handed the girlfriend three hundred dollars.
Armed with the dad’s cash the trio headed to the mall complex. Instead of a shared bonding experience the trip immediately turned into a shopping spree strictly for the thirteen year old. They went in and out of stores grabbing whatever the kid wanted. The girlfriend ended up buying her daughter a sh!t ton of clothes, makeup, and other random items. The OP just trailed along watching her dad’s money disappear into shopping bags that were definitely not for her.
On the way back home the girlfriend decided to stop at Starbucks because her daughter wanted a drink and some cake pops. Up until this point the OP had not asked for a single thing. When it was time to order the girlfriend bought a drink for herself, a drink for her daughter, and two cake pops. The OP finally spoke up and politely asked if she could get something too.
This is where the girlfriend revealed her true colors. She looked at her boyfriend’s daughter and claimed she ran out of money. She casually promised to get the OP something next time. She blew through three hundred dollars of the dad’s money on her own child and could not spare five bucks for a Frappuccino for the teenager who was forced to tag along.
Hoping to at least get a tiny sugar rush out of this miserable day the OP asked if she could have just one of the two cake pops. The girlfriend shot her down with the most savage and unnecessary comment ever. She declared that the treats were her daughter’s reward for hard work. She then looked at the OP and said it would be wrong for her to take one since she did not do anything that deserved being rewarded.
The OP was rightfully very upset. When they finally got back to the house the dad immediately noticed the Starbucks cups. He looked at his daughter and asked where her drink was. The OP did not hesitate and delivered a flawless dose of petty honesty. She looked right at him and repeated the girlfriend’s exact words. She told her dad she was not allowed to get a drink because she did not deserve it.
The girlfriend instantly panicked and got defensive. She accused the OP of twisting her words while the spoiled thirteen year old chimed in to call the OP greedy and jealous. But the internet is firmly on the side of the teenager. When your boyfriend hands you three hundred dollars for a group outing you make sure his actual child gets a coffee.
