This Woman Made Her Brother’s Family Sleep on the Floor After a Fire, and Now She’s Mad That Karma Has Returned the Favor

There is an old saying that you should treat people the way you want to be treated. It is the Golden Rule for a reason. But some people seem to think the rule only applies when they are the ones in need. When they are in a position of power, they become tyrants, only to cry “unfair” the moment the tables turn. One woman on Reddit just served her sister-in-law a dish of revenge that was best served cold, and honestly, it tastes delicious.

The Original Poster (OP) begins her story with a tragedy that is every homeowner’s nightmare. Two years ago, her house was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Thankfully, the kids were at school and the adults were at work, so everyone was safe. But they lost everything. To make matters worse, insurance took nearly a year to pay out. After a month in a hotel, they were desperate and had to move in with the husband’s sister.

At first, the sister-in-law (SIL) seemed like a savior. She offered her spare room and office space for a reasonable $100 a week. But that generosity had an expiration date of exactly three weeks. Suddenly, the deal changed. The rent skyrocketed to $250 a week, and the family of five was forced into a single room.

Let’s really look at what this SIL did. She took a traumatized family of five who had just lost their home and crammed them into a room the size of a closet. They were sleeping on the floor and living out of trash bags. She charged them nearly $1,000 a month for the privilege, despite having almost no bills of her own. To add insult to injury, she even claimed the OP’s children on her food stamps while making the OP buy all their own food. That is not just being a bad host. That is financial predation.

But the universe has a funny way of balancing the books. Three months ago, the OP’s grandmother moved into assisted living and transferred the deed of her five-bedroom farmhouse to the OP. Just like that, the family went from trash bags on the floor to owning a sprawling property. And wouldn’t you know it, the SIL’s luck went in the exact opposite direction.

The SIL lost her own house because she hadn’t paid her land taxes for several years. She came crawling to the OP, asking if she and her stepdaughter could move into the farmhouse. The OP decided to offer her a deal. She offered one bedroom for $800 a month, with the stipulation that the SIL buy and cook her own food.

The SIL’s reaction was pure entitlement. She looked at the OP like she had ten heads, complaining that she shouldn’t have to share a room with her stepdaughter when there were empty rooms available. She whined that she couldn’t afford $800 a month plus food. The lack of self-awareness is staggering. She apparently forgot that she made a family of five live in a closet for more money than that.

The OP hit back with the ultimate reality check. She reminded the SIL that they managed to cram five people into a closet while she was collecting their rent and stealing their food benefits. The SIL didn’t like facing her own reflection and decided to leave. Now the family is calling the OP childish and saying she needs to “let the past go.”

Here is the thing about “letting the past go.” It is easy to say when you weren’t the one sleeping on a floor while your host used your money for leisure activities. The OP isn’t being childish. She is protecting her peace and her home from a leech. The offer was actually generous considering the history. She didn’t force the SIL to sleep on the floor or live out of trash bags. She just asked for rent.

So is she the ahole? Absolutely not. NTA. The SIL is finding out that you can’t burn bridges and then expect people to send a boat to save you. The OP offered a roof over her head, which is more than she deserved. If the SIL wants better accommodations, maybe she should have thought about that before she extorted her own brother’s family during their darkest hour.

NTA shoes on the other foot and she don’t like the fit. People are crap, they get to treat others like crap, take advantage of their bad situations but when it turns around they get holly. Don’t worry about what everyone is saying stand your ground. If the have an opinion they can let her stay with them
