But one stepdad on Reddit completely skipped the maturity memo and opted for absolute cartoon villain behavior instead. His raging insecurity over a totally innocent situation led him to commit actual theft against a child.
The Original Poster is a mom with a fourteen year old son named Adam from a previous marriage. She has been married to her current husband for four years and handles all the school related duties for her teenager. About a year ago Adam became best friends with a boy named Dean. The mom notes that Dean is a fantastic kid and an incredibly positive influence on her son.
Because the boys are so close the mom naturally ended up crossing paths with Dean’s father Mike. Mike is a single dad and the two parents would see each other daily during the chaotic school pickup and drop off lines. This perfectly normal school parking lot interaction completely triggered the OP’s husband. The husband started obsessing over Mike and accused the single dad of crossing boundaries. The OP firmly disagreed and saw nothing wrong with their casual parent chats.
The family was thrown into a terrifying crisis when Adam fell seriously ill and eventually required surgery. Going through a major medical scare is incredibly hard on a fourteen year old kid. Thankfully his best friend Dean was a loyal buddy and visited him at the hospital to keep his spirits up. Sometimes Mike would tag along to bring his son to the visits.
Instead of being grateful that his stepson had such a strong support system the husband acted like a petty child. He would blatantly ignore Mike at the hospital or make passive aggressive comments right to his face. The hostility was so obvious that Mike caught onto the weird vibe immediately. The OP had to tell her husband to knock it off because his glaring jealousy was actively making the hospital room uncomfortable for the two teenage boys.
Weeks after Adam was finally discharged and resting at home the OP walked into his bedroom and found her son crying. Adam completely broke down and revealed that Dean had sent him a harsh text message officially ending their friendship and then immediately blocked his number. The OP was entirely confused because the boys had been perfectly fine during the hospital visits. She initially wanted to reach out to Dean to figure out what went wrong.
The next day the mystery was solved in the most disturbing way possible. The OP was in her husband’s car and stumbled across a cell phone. It was not just any phone. It was Dean’s phone. When she confronted her husband about why he possessed a fourteen year old boy’s device he tried to claim he simply borrowed it. The OP obviously did not buy that ridiculous lie and pushed him for the actual truth.
The husband finally confessed to a master plan so unhinged it belongs in a soap opera. He admitted that he literally stole Dean’s cell phone straight out of the hospital room. He then used the stolen device to send a cruel breakup text to his own stepson and blocked the number so Adam could not reply. He orchestrated a massive teenage heartbreak just to soothe his own fragile ego.
His justification for this bizarre crime spree makes him look even worse. He blamed the entire situation on Mike. He claimed the single dad was acting inappropriately and getting too close to his wife. But instead of talking to his wife like a normal adult he decided to isolate the kids. He confessed he chose this deceptive strategy because he did not want Adam to hate him for banning the friendship but he desperately wanted Mike out of the picture.
The OP absolutely lost her mind and started screaming at him. The husband tried to play the victim by whining that she had brushed off his feelings of discomfort. She rightfully yelled back that his arguments were completely ridiculous because Mike had been nothing but respectful and helpful. She called her husband insecure, unreasonable, and incredibly cruel for intentionally causing a sick child so much emotional pain just to play mind games.
Realizing his evil stepdad era was officially exposed the husband practically begged his wife to keep his secret from Adam. But the OP is a good mother who prioritizes her kid over a toxic marriage. She grabbed the stolen phone, marched over to Dean, returned his property, and explained the entire insane situation to both of the boys. She cleared the air and saved the friendship.
Unsurprisingly Adam is no longer speaking to his stepdad. The husband is now furious and actively blaming the OP for ruining his relationship with the teenager. He actually has the audacity to say she should have kept the secret between the adults. You do not get to demand adult privileges when you steal a child’s property and fake text messages to break up a friendship. There is something very wrong with your husband. Your son should not bear the burden of your (I would hope soon-to-be) ex-husband. He has jealousy and insecurities that I would think may require professional help. This makes me wonder what other things he has done that you and your son are unaware of. How many other situations has he sabotaged…in your life…in your son’s life, etc.
He is clearly a manipulator. Stay with him and you are giving permission to this type of BS. Staying with him could, however, cost you your relationship with your son. He will see this as your husband being more worthy of your love. I would suggest choosing wisely. There is quite likely more at stake than you realize.
