We have all seen those TikToks of girls living their best lives as travel nannies, sipping mocktails on a yacht while the kids nap. It looks like the dream gig. But anyone who has ever actually watched children for money knows that “vacation nanny” is often code for “indentured servant with a tan.” One 17-year-old on Reddit just lived through the classic bait-and-switch nightmare, but thanks to her parents’ savage advice to get everything in writing, she turned the tables in spectacular fashion.
The Original Poster (OP) is a 17-year-old who accepted a gig to accompany her neighbors to the Caribbean over the holidays. The deal sounded sweet on paper: ten days at an all-inclusive resort, sharing a room with the kids, in exchange for $500 and three guaranteed days off. Her parents, being the absolute legends they are, insisted she get the entire agreement in writing. This singular decision would later become the nail in the coffin for her entitled neighbors.
The schedule was simple: work two days, take one day off, rinse and repeat. It was a fair trade. The OP was essentially acting as a third parent for 70% of the trip. On her third scheduled day off, she decided to cash in on her freedom and go scuba diving. She got up early, left the resort, and went to look at some fish, assuming the parents were capable of watching their own children on a day they contractually agreed to.

When she got back, sun-kissed and happy, she walked into a firestorm. The parents were furious that she had “left without warning.” Their excuse? They had met another couple and wanted to go golfing. Apparently, in their minds, the OP’s “day off” was just a placeholder until they found something better to do. They accused her of screwing up their plans, completely ignoring the written contract that said this day belonged to her.
Most people would apologize for the misunderstanding, but these neighbors decided to double down on their entitlement. They spent the flight home sulking, and the moment they landed, they took to social media to blast the teenager. They posted publicly about how “irresponsible” she was, trying to ruin her reputation in the neighborhood. It was a bold move to publicly shame the person holding the receipts, and boy, did it backfire.
One of the other local families saw the posts and called the OP to get her side of the story. The OP simply sent over a photo of the signed agreement showing the work schedule. That was all it took. The narrative flipped instantly. The neighbors weren’t the victims of a lazy teen; they were exploiters who tried to renege on a deal and then bully a minor when she stood her ground.
The fallout was swift and brutal. The other babysitters in the area—and their protective parents—saw the proof and collectively decided these neighbors were persona non grata. They are effectively blacklisted. Nobody wants to work for people who try to change the terms of a deal mid-trip and then smear a teenager online for following the rules.
The OP admits she feels a little bad because they paid for her vacation, but let’s be real. They didn’t pay for her vacation out of the kindness of their hearts; they paid for a service. They got seven days of childcare for a bargain price. The moment they tried to steal her time and ruin her reputation, they lost the right to sympathy.
So, is she the ahole? Absolutely not. N-T-A. This is a lesson in the power of a paper trail. The neighbors tried to play stupid games with a 17-year-old’s time and reputation, and they won a stupid prize: having to watch their own kids for the rest of eternity because no one else will hire them.
NTA lol they tried to screw you and ended up screwed themselves by changing things up and then blaming you for their butter hurt reaction. Then decided to take it up a notch by trying to make you look bad and it backfired. Some people aren’t to bright. Always get agreements in writing even with family and friends it protects you in the end. Wonder if they will have a hard time finding a sitter in the future. I would alway decline to sit for them in the future.
